would you agree?

Singaporeans are nurtured to be anal, narrow-minded, just like how the gov tries to mould us, we do what we think its right and accept anything that is fed by the "upper-powers". we only accept one thing and not the other. plus Everyone follows what everyone else is doing. and to accept something new is seen as a no-no. until its considered "cool" with the public. everything is a fad if not, overrated. Wouldnt you people agree that singaporeans accept new bands or new materials abit apprehensive than other communities? We only accept something when its established or liked/known by many. and i think its not the bands or the music's fault that the singapore's music industry/scene isnt vibrant. its the people behind the industry/scene is to blame. I believe that singapore music has soo much more to offer, alot of diversity, basically good shit around. but people take to much time to appreciate it and basically all these talents fade to black cos of the lack of support that they ought to get. and theres a huge problem with people and labels. I fairly think its abit stupid for people to label or categorize music. Labelling and categorising music just stops you from expanding horizons. especially if youre musicians. Emo kids go to gigs with their emo hair to watch their emo bands and accepts nothing else, metalheads go to gigs and watch metal bands and accepts nothing else. anal dont you think? i think that is abit selfish on their part. then everyone complains about the industry/scene. that isnt really fair on the musician's part. we shud give new bands a chance to shine. arent you abit tired to see the same bands performing again and again at gigs. no offence to those that ive hit the head with a nail, like the malay saying goes (saper makan chili, dier yg rase pedas) :D so yeah, just my 2 cents.

Wall of text FTL!

Anyway theres nothing wrong with our scene(s).
Just that maybe not enough people. Or maybe not enough people buying stuff.

Labelling music is just a way to describe music.
A person who likes emo music goes to an emo gig, theres nothing wrong with that.
If he likes metal as well, he can go to a metal gig too. Simple as that.

If the show's name was called ' GIG! ' then nobody would know what main genre the gig was, what if the gig was full of bands that played music you didnt like/enjoy?

As for Singaporeans being anal and narrow minded, I would say generally as a whole its true =/ but for people liking 'established' music, its the same all around the world.

New young bands to shine? Play covers at artshouse lor.. xD
I mean seriously, if your band had decent originals and a decent work ethic, its really not that hard to find gigs in Singapore to play in, even if you just formed and had no connections whatsoever.

5cents worth. CHEERS! xD

...& the govt made sure there are no avenues to manifest frustrations except for forums like SOFT

woah, i have to agree with sub..

the way i see it all comes down the the individual.
what are we doing?
are we doing our part?
arent we ourself guilty of being subjective fans of a certain bands?(that we wont mind seeing perform again and again)

plus it cant be blame. singaporeans were bred that way. its in their nature. this is not america. this is not japan.
so like it or not we have to accept our fate.

no matter how hardcore/rebel/revolutionary you are. your still a puppet. a free one,(only to a certain extent only to be played according to the master's rule when your stepping out of your boundaries.
so you cant really blame anyone.

True, true.

Everyone has their own opinion.

And aren't you being a little ignorant on your part, describing that only metalheads go for metal gigs and emokids go for emo gigs? I'm sure musicians aren't as constricting as you think they are.

Although I will agree that some(I don't know why but it's usually that "rockers" and "poppies") of them only know how to appreciate their own form of music.

Imagine what'd happen if we suddenly stopped labeling and categorizing our food. Think about it for a while and apply that to music.

"Although I will agree that some(I don't know why but it's usually that "rockers" and "poppies") of them only know how to appreciate their own form of music."

This made me ROFLMAO.

I would put it this way though. It's not that they aren't receptive to other forms/genres, but they're more into music for the image, not passion.

But then again, that's how I see things.

TS: I won't say you're misled, but we're not who you think us to be.

the problem with this understanding is that people label their music excessively to such an extent it breeds confusion & disrespect when they should really acknowledge its fundamentals: no use calling it symphonic-viking-black-&-roll metal, when it's really the musician's interpretation of the black metal genre...

the labels come from external pressure, not from the people or music they are referring to.

people attend metal gigs because they enjoy metal. not because of labels. it is YOU who are labelling them as metalheads because of their preference.

unless you can prove that people listen to a particular genre of music for the sake of living up to some kind of label or image, rather than to enjoy the music itself, then i don't see the logic in your reasoning.

and to think that singaporeans are like puppets is nonsense. singaporeans are a well educated and enlightened people. you blame the hard governance of the country on the ignorance of the people. but society is in such a state because of the way it is governed, not of any fault of the people.

just to clarify, although i know that the government consists of ministers who are people as well, i am using the term 'government' to describe the institution, and not the group of people who comprise of it.

it's lazy journalism responsible for this bog-down, rather than living up the hype as proof... (there's no specific tag for this kinda music, so let's call it something).

it might not totally be a case of being lazy. i think that the media profits from such a 'conflict' occuring. everyone has their own agenda

C'mon. Why can't musicians just learn to be compromising and accepting? I cannot believe that we ostracize other pretty and beautiful forms of music.

Learn to embrace other forms of amazing music.

the digression in the TS's first post here is quite alarming. first, he comes across blaming the goverment, then its on to the music. make your point TS, which displeases you more? the govt or the music dichotomy?

So who do you blame? Emo or Metalheadz?

There should be more hippies here man.. So the psychedelic colours of their culture would make Singapore not a green but colourful city..

maybe we should just concentrate on what kind of music you're passionate abt.
why not focus all the energy on making music or appreciating music ?
it's much more worthwhile than keep "complaining" abt categorizing music or rather it seems like a form of discrimination to me.
people have their own preference.
as long as we listen/appreciate/make the music we love, why care abt others ?
i certainly feel that u'll be a happier person if u ignore the, "sorry i dont listen to metal." or "yucks, i dont listen to bubblegum pop." or "i think the click five is a pussy and gayish band."

just my $1.
