Woah Drummer

He's smooooooooooth!

I think hiphop/R&B drummers are very underrated. They can reeeeaally groove man :D

yea man....gospel drumming are also quite underrated...search gospel drum in youtube...bound to see some good chops

Great chops.

But in my opinion, he's playing way too much. He's not even playing for the song! Seems like this is more of self indulgence and showing off. To me as long as you are not playing for the music, that is bad drumming.

You know, somehow I was totally expecting that kind of reply.

In case you haven't noticed, it IS a 'showboat session'. It's just him playing along to a friggin LOOP.

It's not a song! It's just him showing off what he can do and cutting loose with whatever phrasings he can come up with on the spot. Nothing to do with 'playing for the song', coz, well, what song? It's just a LOOP.

Woah.... i never knew chops like that existed until i watched that vid.... man... really makes me wanna improve myself...

Thanks for the great vid.....

Yea, I totally agree with funkified.

That Pete guy was just freestyling with his arsenal of strokes, which I thought was cool, because it gives us a glimpse of how to incorporate the sextuplets etc. into the building up of songs, and I really digged his phrasings.

I'm suddenly reminded of Jeremy Haynes from gospelchops.com. He doesn't overplay in that sense, but he's able to have a wholistic musical/rhythmic approach to whatever he's playing.

In the same light, I was blown away when I visited an all-black church in US. Sounds of the hammond, groovy bass lines that will keep u gyrating, and tight rhythms/chops from the drums.... NICE!!!!!

Happy Drumming Everyone!

I disagree...

In fact, i think if a drummer just strictly keeping rhythm, might as well get a drum machine..

In my personal opinion, being melodic and rhythmic makes a drummer shines without overlapping other musicians' spaces... Making sure that the rhythmic approach fits the music style...

The drumming in that video fits very well, that is the approach of RnB music... In addition, like what Funkifized stated, its a showcase for RnB drummers.. I see no reason why they can't play like Buddy Rich playing RnB music..

i watched a few of those clips and was greatly amazed. great feel and fills.

anyway i tink they are playing to a song n not a loop.

maybe cuz of recording or wat, it sounds ok from my headphones. but in live, i doubt they hav the balance sound. they seems to be hitting everything quite hard huh.. anyway tats debatable. i just think things should be more controlled in a way or so.

The sound can get out of control if you're talking about purely acoustic without electronic amplification. Like in a school symphonic band.
My conductor always reminded me to keep watch of my volume throughout the kit, while maintaining timing of course.
But for this case, it's pretty okay (to a certain extent) to bash away. Even if the bass drum is being hit soft, there's always compensation through the sound mixing console since everything's miked in a live performance kit.
