Why Ya'll Categorizing This?!!

Like seriously, WHY DOES EVERYONE seem to categorize music.
ya'lls like "oh no, I dont like Alt Rock", "I dont listen to metal"
you should instead say you DONT listen to that PARTICULAR ARTIST not _______ as a whole

Whats the point? I dont care what genre or what "Scene" it belongs to?!
as long as it's GOOD, I listen to it.

Im a Metal head, but i LOVE everything from Hindie to opera to reggae to jazz to symphonies to Jazz to Rap to Jrock to punk, you get the idea

What im trying to say is that if everyone uses Categorizing for music, everyone's gonna want to take sides and argue over stupid crap that isnt even worth it, you know what im saying?

as "musicians" you shouldn't have a one track mind towards music, but if thats the way you choose, your untouchable.

If someone says "Well, im sorry but i dont like Metal, i just dont dig it"
then theres nothing i can do about it

i tink it's for easy referencing la bro.. issues of labelling music does happen, sometimes for the good, sometimes otherwise.. =)

Yeah, For me, I listen all kinds. If im in a band playing music, I would not 'Genre-alised' it.

Be genreless and play whatever genre/type

bah,
everyone has their own ways.

you can force your ways into others.

let them believe in their beliefs and we believe in ours.

i listen to anything and everything.
and my bands covers anythign and doing experimental originals.
so yeah.

yet to listen to indian songs.
but im keen to find out that cool indian song i heard last few months when i entered 7-11

i think genre-lising is important. because each is unique in its own way. imagine heavy rocking sound for jazz or jazz drums style feel of playing but with a shredding metal guitarist.
but i think what you're talking about here is consumer/band member preference of influence. i don't think it's a problem, not many ppl are dissing each other, at least not that I know of. ppl more or less "bochap" or just go "I don't wanna go there, why? because i don't and I can (my life choice), simply just because."

I actually noticed politics and racism more common than genre-wars. genre-wars are for the narrow mind/childish.

i record many band genre music, but most ppl are surprised i'm a trancehead. or at least when I give them a lift in my car they're like "wth , you listen to techno?(trance, but they wouldn't know the difference) beng sia."

all about the feel. i used to find jazz boring, till one day i cleared out my car stereo, and my wife left a norah jones album inside the cd player and after listening to it. it's not as bad as i thought. but that wouldn't make me listen to other jazz artists. it's about moderation of everything.

10¢ worth

^^norah jones is hardly representative of jazz bro

also rap=crap and everyone else's opinions suck

just kidding. I find that getting worked up needlessly over musically ignorant people is pointless. let them be, as long as you get to enjoy what you want to. a couple of assholes slamming my favorite rock subgenre isn't going to give me sleepless nights or stop me from enjoying mogwai or <insert favorite band here>

relax, AzNjT, i think people who do actually argue over different genres of music are the minority. most of us don't really mind other genres, and even if they are not to our taste we do not put down people who like these genres too.

Yeah I haven't.
Just went to the link you gave.
Its sounds good in its own right.

But i can't listen to more than 5 mins of that.
But I'll get bored, by the droning rhythm.
Really feels like can enchant snakes. LoL

To the TS,

Theres always a need to classify,
If not how the hell anyone knows
what Falu sounds like without
listening.

Imagine, A and B talking.

A: Hey, have you heard of Pikuyang band?

b: Nope! What do they play?

A: Techno Blues

b: Shit! no kidding?

A: Yeah, no kidding, Imagine hendrix shredding to Blue Daba dee daba die!

B: Boy, that sure sounds like Techno Blues. Definitely Not my kinda stuff

LMAO, Can't believe I came up with this shit for illustration.

amnesiac: i would pass them a demo. genres can be irritating at times, for the musician. like mention singer-songwriter and people start assuming you're just like damien rice or something. it works best for critics and for promoters who like to lump everyone together so it sells nicely. like indie lol, indie, goddamn. and the freaking emo label which was quite hot a while ago.

In the beginning, music is categorised for easy identification. And then sub-categorised because each music type is geting more diversified.

But.....the problem now is people like to sub, sub and multiple sub categorise music into endless categories or genres. Anything that deviates a little from the "norm" for each genre is re-branded and re-categorised in various sub-genres. And it branches out like a multi-level kind of thing. The chief culprits for this are usually the music critics, magazine writers or publicists. They need to create all these gibberish genres so they can have something to write about.

And yes, the "genre wars" thing is utterly pathetic as well as childish.

Do you want to know why music needs to be categorized? Very simple. Let me illustrate in simple terms.

ME: Hey dude, how's that book you're reading?
YOU: It's awesome.
ME: Um, what type of book is it anyway? I wanna see if I'll get into it too
YOU: it's a....um, book
ME: Yeah? What kind of book is it?
YOU: Book
ME: F*** what KIND of book you kuku!
YOU: BOOK BOOK BOOK BOOK
ME: Simi book?! BOOKIE ah? Euro soccer shiok! B, book, book, book! Damnit!

Comprehendo?

Another example

ME: Hey, um, oh no it's you again. Um, what kind of music are you into?
YOU: Um, music!
ME: What KIND of music, you 'person who starts a tread full of rhetorical questions', you!
YOU: Um, um. I am listening to music!
ME: ..... I'm sorry I gotta go. That wall over there is trying to talk to me

THE END!

P.S. What kind of thread is this? It's a thread thread. What's a thread thread? PFFT! WHY CATEGORIZE A THREAD! That's so like...wannabe, like, yeah, like, um, yeah. (scratches head)

well, for the first illustration, 'you' could have just told 'me' a rough synopsis of the novel.
for the second, 'you' could have said something like, oh im into band a, b, c these kinda bands. right. categorising just makes it easier for people to check out music of the same type. but sometimes it just isn't accurate cause a lot of bands fall in between genres

It's VERY VERY VERY useful when looking for band members.

Most of you look for band members to spend time together outside of the studio.

Then there are others who donch want to spend time with their bandmembers outside of the studio. They just want to meet and make music - with people, gadgets, computer and cables that they can click with, musically. :D

Not so important in terms of finding fans. Just do a good job and folks will like it. Of course, donch be a twit and indulge in excessive self-indulgency.

U2 was considered an underground band when they started. They never changed their style or aims - they just continued doing what they liked and believed in themselves enough to continue doing it.

They've become one of the biggest bands around for many many years.
