Can anybody tells me why the 3rd string (G) always go out of tune for all Les Paul guitars ? Pls enlighten me. Thanks.

either you're using to light a guage(happens to me on guage 8 not sure bout you guys)... either that, pull your string until you can feel the string tightening at the tuning peg... then retune, re pull, but dont pull too hard, else the string will ka piak!!!!!!

i don think it jus applies to LP guitars. My guitar, a yamaha aes620 G string also goes out of tune after some playing, when the other strings are still in tune

i think it's the machine heads. My SG is like that too.
when i tune to standard tunning it wont detune so easily, whereas if i'm in drop B tunning it goes off very fast.

changed to a heavier gauge and it does helps

some tuning tips:

1) make sure you really stretch your string, coz sumtimes neva stretch enuff, dats y everytime out of tune

2) when tuning, ALWAYS tune up, the string will keep in tune longer quoted frm eric johnson, and i find that true

3) if you cant seem to tune the string, and its been sum time since u changed ur strings, den probrably the string is dead, and you have to buy new 1s

4) maybe you bend this string too much and ur tuners suck? jkjk

hope dis helps

maybe adding abit of pencil graphite in the nut slit will help.

cos it goes out of tune after you store it right?

aiyo... not ALL les pauls lah... i dont think so sway lah.
i have a feeling the the graphite will help

I dun think it happens to my Ibanez SA160. It affects my Epiphone LP. It goes out of tune after playing for abt 10 mins. Does placing the lead graphite in the nut really helps ?

graphite helps to smoothen the contact point lor.
so that when you turn the tunning heads the resultant tension doesnt get "trap" in a tight/squeaky nut. and get released when you do a bend or something. hope you get what i mean.

that is... if you've tried all the other methods the others have mentioned already. i.e, Pre-stretching, blah blah blah...

i wonder why mine the G STRING always broke!! LOL!!

haha...that happens to me too! haha...and when i asked my friends, they say i whack too hard on the G string...lol...

and that very same G string goes out of tune often too, but the problem is not so severe nowadays. I used to put only a few coils of string around the tuners, like one or two, for convenience's sake, but recently, i've been putting almost the whole length of the string onto my tuners. Well, less for the low E, A and D strings, but all the way for G to E.

It's something that i learnt from an interview by guitar world, for BB King, i think that it does help, keep the guitar in tune, and i have less problems when i downtune my guitars to C or B. I'm using .10s, and like what some of the others said, using graphite thingy...it does help a little.

Well, the quality of the strings do matter too, I'm currently using Dean Markeley's signature series, and sometimes, just for the fun of it, i'll use black diamond coated or DR coated. Yeah...still prefer my dean markeleys' to D'addario strings though.

but seriouslly speaking .. G strings tend to break faster than others...

my fren has a G string on a epi 335 / casino copy ...

it breaks in less than 2 weeks and on a nearly regular basis
