Which mic should I get?

Consider the range of mikes from Heil Sound. I have a PR 22 handheld dynamic, it has much more clarity than the SM58 and is pretty easy to work with without much equalisation. However, it is also more expensive.

i've just been on the lookout myself though more for live vocals.. but I won't see why any mic i buy won't be suitable for recording unless i'm cutting some album... for general recording, any mic that makes your voice sound good would suffice.

I know alot of lead vocalists who love the electro-voice N/D767a (which I bought), the audix OM5/7, Neumann KMS 105, Rode S1, Shure KSM 9, Blue encore (Which i also bought). So do a read up around and u're gonna find many good reviews.. people here are helpful definitely but quite a number of us may not have researched more than what is available at some of our common stores.

Hey, slowth. What's your take on the EV N/D767a and blue enCORE? Which enCORE did you get? I've heard good stuffs about both the EV and the new blue mikes.

i was impressed enough with the reviews to get them but they're not in yet. I'll chime back when i get to test them abit.

the blue encore 200... best looking mic i've seen in a LONG while

Oh yea man, you got the 200! It is a very handsome mic but don't forget to turn on the phantom when it's plugged in. Look forward to your thoughts..

the EV sounded very nice last weekend.. I thought even from where i was that it was clearer than the Shures.

The blue had to be sent back for RMA. i'l update when i can!

Cool. How is the proximity effect of the EV compared to SM58 or even the Beta58? Does it also have more lift? What's RMA?

the Blue came back today woohoo!

ok for the EV mmm they have this dynamic bass control thingy.. so the prox effect is smoothened out abit.. I could get up real close to the mic and still sound quite smooth and not overly boomy.

Used the Blue at rehearsal today, EQ flat again.. I do find it a tad warmer than the EV from memory. Both sounded quite abit clearer than the Shures.
The Blue has a smoother sound to it with slightly more warmth. The EV i think has a slightly higher peak in the mids/highs that could cut through a lil better but also a lil thinner. the Blue had a flatter response.

Either one would work great I think.. I don't have any animosity for a particular one. I'll prob need to do an A/B soon to check it out.

Both to my ears way better than the shures.

Managed to have more side by side tests last wkend.

Tried the Audio Technica line of mics and I was impressed... when I got to do A/B/C listening.. i found the blue mic to sound abit too crisp..a little brittle. The EV was fuller.. and woah the Audio Technica AE6100 Dyamic hypercardioid was HAPPENING!

go check it out if u can.. must be a reason why daugthry, taylor swift, BoA, and even the pop use it!

Haha, that AE6100 is a pricey mic, I'll see if I get a chance, haha. There're not many studios here that use AT mikes, to my knowledge, let alone its AE range. But was the hyper-cardiord pattern too tight and hard to work with? I've preferred a regular cardiord so far, not even the super cardiord; I tend to be sloppy on the mic.

how much is it?

mm well I use it on a mic stand cos I play the guitar as well.. and i think it was very nice sounding =)
Mmm well hyper just helps build good habits right? haha but of cos hyper is good if u've loud stage etc la.

I can give u a contact of someone I know if u're keen to get the AE.

I think it's about US$190 from Internet retailers. Yea, it will help cultivate good habits to a certain extent and definitely a massive help on loud stages. Did you sound natural or more "boosted" and "excited" on it? How about its proximity effect?

I won't be able to get it at the moment though, shall experiment when I've the spare cash, haha; pretty happy with my Heil PR 22 now.

cool! I can prob get it for less if u want.. let me know next time.

what kinda applications do you use your mic in? I sing in church so there's whole bands and stuff..

mmm from my sound engineers there i sounded very natural, most like what I sound like "unplugged". the EV is a lil more excited. I would say the blue was the least natural and without maybe a lil reverb it could sound abit static but i believe the application in a band it'd be useful to cut through. But I think all would do well in a band. All sounded alot more lively than the shures. Though they sounded warmer in general i found it muddied the lower registers. I always got feedback i couldn't be understood well.

U know proximity effect is something i've not really taken into account..shrugs maybe bad habit haha but i'm usually quite close to the mic, about an inch?

How's the Heil? where can i try those ah?

Maybe after I get the AE we should try a swap =) and u can test out the Ev too =)
