what is a versatile guitar (make and model) that can play many styles (country, pop, folk, jazz ,blues, rock, funk)? It need not be extremely good in any of these styles but should be good enough to play reasonably well in most styles.
any thoughts? thanks. :)

well ... its the guitarist that matters most , not so much of the guitar in question

in any case i recommend a stratocaster

there are two type of pickup, which is SINGLE or HUMBUCKER. Physically , the Humbucker is twice as big as the Singles. And yes, that shiny metal on LP is is humbucker (alright... alright... it's not. it's just the humbucker cover actually) , but not all humbucker come in shiny metal shape :D

And for each guitar, there are some configurations you can have. E.g. S-S-S, H-H or H-S-S, etc.

luthermusic

www.luthermusic.com l(beside G77 shop)

also brings in japanese strat

u could go to www.mrmisse.com and join us in our japan order :D we ordering gear from japan ( direct from this website : www.ishibashi.co.jp )

anyway just about fender strats

3 origins

MIJ - made in japan
MIM - made in mexico
MIA - made in AMERICA ( premium price for this)

the general consesus regarding strat is tt

MIA -best
MIJ
MIM

this is reflected price wise too (MIA - most ex , MIM - cheapest)

a standard MIM strat will set u back 900 dollars.

an MIJ depending on your source , 900- 1100

MIA on average are >1300-1400

I'm surprised nobody recommended this guitar...

I choose not to call that Line6 a real guitar. I agree with mikemann that a fat Strat or I call a super strat is a versatile guitar. Don't have to be a Fender, Yamaha among others is equally good for the budget conscious.

Y not? Its made of real mahogany for the body, a real maple/rosewood neck, mother of pearl inlays, Gotoh tuners and has 6 strings... Only real diff is that of the electronics plus it has all the guitar models that anyone can ask for.. Thats versatility if u ask me... Plus the guy is askin a guitar that can do many styles and I think for once thanks to technology we have one..

It's an expensive model (how much is it? over 1.2k definitely), unless the guy is willing to pay then it'll be a great start. Real crazy simulations in that thing. But then again, the true tone seekers would stay away, but thats besides the point yup.

That guitar, I think would be considered as an outright blasphemy for the purist guitar person.

Another consideration since it's using digital technology. These part have a certain lifespan, and breakdown will be a beech, not to mention costly to fix even if there is parts. I'd be surprise to find any original circuitry still working after 50yrs. May not even last 25yrs.

Wif a normal guitar, you can change any of the parts on any >50yrs old strat, even rewind the pickup coil, no problem.

A simple life will give you simple problems, a complicated life........the rest you know.

I find its kinda funny that ppl dont give as much critsism to an electric guitar equipped with a piezo circuitry but this Variax does get it fair share of nay sayers.. Well maybe its just me...

I for one would love to have such technology fitted in my guitar rite now but the thing thats stopping me from gettin one is that the look/design doesnt appeal to me at all... But I've seen ppl combining their current guitars and equippin it with the Variax circuitry which seems really really cool... Esp this one: http://thegreatnothing.free.fr/variax.htm

If only I can get someone to do that with my RG... Hmmm...

I think the reason behind people not criticising piezo circuitry is because it's like an acoustic pickup to help amplify the natural acoustic qualities of the electric guitar. So in a way it's not really considered digital modelling or acoustic simulation.

In any case, the fat strat/super strat recommendations by the others here would serve to be versatile enough for any player.

I'm a proponent of HSS-pickup guitars for their versatility.

In addition to a 5-way switch on a HSS-pickup configured guitar, I've loaded a couple of other hot-mods.

My (Red) Anderson has a 2-way blower mini-toggle that when flicked, bypass the 5-way setting and activates the bridge pickup. The bottom tone knob can also be pulled up to split the bridge humbucker for a thinner Tele-like tone.

My (Green) Suhr has a 2-way mini-toggle to add the neck pickup to any of the settings on the 5-way switch. It makes the guitar sound a little more rounded and vintage-like, esp on the with the bridge humbucker.

My (Burning Water) Tyler has a 3 x 3-way switches. It sets each individual pickup to run Series, Parallel or Split (even the SCs are stacked hums). In addition, there is a black button to activate a Demeter mid-boost for thicker mids.

Piezo circuitry is just another kind of analog pickup. There are simple piezo circuitry which is just the pickup, a switch and the volume pot. No active circuit involved.

Just that active circuits gives you the versatility of shaping the sound at the tips of you hand. All is still in analog form.

Yes, currently piezo on-board is still a limited feature, due to low demand for such guitars. Also to note, the saddle pickups do break down too, and matching parts are almost impossible to find over here in Spore. Have seen a few cases myself (eg. parker fly, fender scalloped malmsteen).
