Which Drum kit to get : Peace Legion, Premier Olympic or Carlos

Hi,

need to get a budget drum kit for my 5 yr old son for practice at home. I have narrowed down to the above kits and hope you guys can help me decide which one to choose. I have no experience with drums so I do not want to purchase a 2nd hand set as there is no way for me to tell the condition of the drums. So I'll stick to brand new set.

Btw, Peace Legion and Premier Olympic do not come with crash cymbal. Is it really necessary to get a crash cymbal ? I believe I can add on in the future right ?

I appreciate all comments and advices. Thanks ! :)

i think the basic set shld at least have a hi hat and a ride. i myself own a Premier Olympic.Because when i buy my drum set,it comes with a hi hat and a ride and a throne too. Its a good 5pcs starter kit and the sound produce from the kit is not bad.can consider getting the Premier Olympic :D

Well, if you have a choice in terms of budget, Carlos is definitely out.
Yea, you can do without the crash. I hardly touched the crash and even the ride cymbals when I started to learn drumming. The crash habit only came in when I took exams or starting jamming with my friends. :D Hope I provided some help.

Premier Olympic is second ranked of five on Musicradar, for Beginners kits. So cant go wrong here. In time, an extra cymbal, upgraded cymbals, and a quality set of heads (=skins), will probably be in order. Best wishes.

There is absolutely no dire need for a crash cymbal if you are just beginning learning to drum. I believe that a kit should have a ride and a hi-hat though, those are the bare essentials as the "timekeepers" or whatever you'd like to call them.

I've heard that Carlos drum kits are bad stuff, so I'd suggest you to stay away from them. Not sure about the rest, I own a Pearl Target. :)

Thanks guys for your advices. So I guess Carlos is out. Have searched through some of the threads and found that Pearl Target is quite affordable but I can't find them in Pearl's website or the local music stores. Is the model no longer in production ?

So if I want to buy Premier, only place is Accent ? As for Peace, Ezi ?

no sale but you can ask for discount....

sale usually mid year or year end...and expect a long queue usually.....

last sale was 13th Dec 2008, only one day at 50%...

one more thing,

actually drums are the easiest instrument to tell out the condition by looking,

if you talk about piano, guitar be it electric or acoustic, electronic keyboard maybe you can say no way to tell if there is certain problems unless you really goo deep...

honestly for drums, it is pretty easy & straight forward.....check around for 2nd Hands, some are infact more well kept then showroom set if you are lucky...

Went scouting around. Got some prices and some surprised me.

Premier Olympic (Black) = $950 (Accent)

Pearl Target (maroon) customer set $800 without throne but comes with bass damper ring) (Swee Lee)

Pearl Target brand new ($1050) (Swee Lee)

Have not checked out Peace Legion yet but also not sure where to find ?

Kind of like the Pearl Traveler at $850 (Swee Lee). Might consider it too.

Almost finalized on my purchase. Just a few visits more will settle it. :)

By the way, Ezi music is currently selling only Peace Marauder which they say has the same config. and price ($620) as the Legion. You guys can check it here.

Any comment on it ? Seems like it is a newer model than Legion but somehow I can't find it in Peace website.

Hi all,
sorry to dig out an old thread. i came across this thread when i searched for junior drum set.
I have a son just like thread starter....he is 6yrs old....he is learning drums using a junior drum set at his music school
i am considering to get him one to practice at home.
Is it neccessary to get the Junior set? or can I get the adult set?
the teacher told me he will only be playing on the junior set for 1-2 yrs.
later on, he needs to play the adult one
I think if he sits on the stool of the adult set...his legs cannot reach the floor
can i get a smaller stool but use the adult set?
sorry for the newbie questions as I am not familiar with drums...but i definitely like drum music...

thanks to all!!!

You can try getting the so-called "jazz" sizes- basically, the drums are smaller but still played by adults.

Then you can try smaller stools with it.

The main concern I have with regular sets is that while you can get a smaller stool and set the snare drum and hi-hat lower, the toms can't go much lower because the bass drum is in the way- so the "jazz size" with a smaller bass drum will allow the toms to go lower, possibly within reach.

I'm not sure if even after this your child can reach! But I don't really think junior kits are really the way to go.

Right now there's some Tama Stagestars on the 2nd hand section of this site, I would recommend them. They're pretty nice drums.

You can also try an alternative setup. You know the standard set-up is to have the toms over the bass drum? You can angle the bass drum outwards to the right, and put the toms in front of the snare. That can let you bring them lower. Of course, it's a non-standard set-up, but then again, that does help the playing. Do consult this with the teacher!
