hi guys,
based on your experience, which combination of drum head sounds the best?
i m looking the tone as we can in the instruction video, those drum heros' drum sing very good.
need your advise, thanks
which head give good projection, but yet doesn't ring so much? remo prinstripe i did used, feel the sound to damp, and less presence. sounds like pail, some times sounds like bongo.
what do u guys think of eans G1 with G1 reso?

Do note that those instructional videos have their sets in studios. Think acoustic effect in the room. Furthermore, when mic-ed up. they often do EQ so well....the drums sound really good. For mic-ing purposes i would use Remo coated ambassadors on the batter toms with clear ambassadors for the resonant. These really "SING" to me. Your projection and ringing problems or whatever else could be the fault of the enviroment your drums are in. For example, if your room contains plenty of hard solid objects like walls you're gonna kill yourself with reverb due to lack of absorption. you'll notice ALOT of difference on where your drums are. I.e resonant facing a wall or open air. hope this helps tho it doesnt really answer your initial question does it? for me. mic-ed up in studio mentioned above. for live open air no mic up. i'll switch to emperor clear batter. Oh yeah. alot depends on the type of music you play. if you want a jazz sound go for thinner heads for sensitivity or rock go for heavy that adds sonic punch. :)

thanks, freakae.
i m with a band, playing in pub, so normally will be r&b, rock and roll, chinse pop songs, i dun like the remp ps, coz it is too fat for me. ppl suggest me to damp the head with tissue, but i dun agree as it kills the tone, and the drum cannot breath. so i think i need to get a right head. coated ambassordor seems like in the middle, not to thick, not to thin yeah.
do u have any suggestion if i not planning to put pillow in my bass drum.

Indeed, I personally find coated ambs top and bottom on toms and snare to be the most versatile. Helps with the budget too as you can swap batters/resos... (assuming you just have the coating worn out, not pit holes or tears!)

Would be helpful to know your drum sizes.. depth x diameter.

hey man, how big is the pub?
for the genre's mentioned i wld use the G1's coated.
1. u might need to use brushes so the coated will be needed.
2. with G1's they resonant alot, u can dull it down but u can't make a dull head sing if u know wat i mean

i find ambassadors for snares the best. ghost notes are clear and clean. and rim clicks for some rnb stuff will project.
let me know wat u use and how it turns out, i'm curious. thanks

I've always found the pillow essential. heh heh. somehow kick drum to me without pillow feels odd even for jazz. you could try using a Remo Falam Slam kevlar patch for the beater to help in tonal focus. wouldnt want my kick to sound like tom.

Ya, guys, maybe i forgot to mention the size of drum.
the tom will be 12"x11", 13" x 12", floor tom 16"x16", so the length i think is the longest for the diameter, so it gives long longer sustain, and the respond will not be so quick, am i right?
ya, weckl, your idea is good.

mr blurred, the size of pub, maybe like sim drive swee lee warehouse, it 3 storey in height.
my freind also told to get G1 coated, and is G2 clear sounds like remo PS?
ya, i use coated ambassador, it is good, rim shot using a wood stick, give a very tight feels, crips. sounds like lars ulrich tone if u use the lars stick, play normally. although i m not using his sign snare,oh out of topic.

thank for your precious opinion, till now, i m planning to take g1 coated for the batter, and G1 reso for reso, EQ2 for bass batter.

i dunno how will it be like, but, after all, if u want a good sound, u gotta pay and invest, doesn't like cymbal, we can try it untill we satisfy, hhaha.....

PS: that's y i have 3 new remo ps heads but do not use it since it is not my kind.

I have long heard Aquarians are good - (The Egg-Shell-Skin Type)...but in Singapore it's hard to get this.

So I use REMO PinStrip & EVANS batter & Reso for all my Kit.

The Evans G1 have better tonal quality - and I believe Single-ply are best for kits.

The REMO are more difficult to tune (since it's 2-Ply - I paid someone to tune it just last week) - one can also get good sound from it - but the differences here is - Tuning the Reso to more loose (the batter also tune it same as almost the Batter) .....it's contrary to when I'm tuning my Evans G1 totally, where the Evans Reso is tighter then the Batter....in all Evans G1 are easier to tune.

Zen: - Yes - Having good Batter & Reso (both together not just changing the Batter)...makes a huge difference in quality of sound produce by any Kit...It's money worth spending.....Stock-Heads are always CRAPPY and will not brings out the true sound from any Kit.

i just bought a set of G2 clear for toms, i believe the brighter head will do well in live situation and a pc reversed dot for snare. unfortunately, ranking out of stock of 13" genera reso, so i need to get back again for reso head.

I've not used my drums in a mic'ed situation but in my experience, resonant drums project better, so if you're playing live without mics I'd go with single ply. If you're being mic'ed, double ply heads tend to be easier to control. Beyond that, what heads to use comes down to personal choice and experimentation.
