Which bass is better?

Find out what woods they're made of, as that will be a bigger determining factor of the tone of the basses.

High chances are that the Squier is made of something like Agathis, which is decent for a beginning bass, but doesn't really offer much in the long-term quest for tone.

I'm not familiar with Yamahas, but if they're made of alder, I would strongly suggest that you try them out. The BBs are known to be a series of good basses.

Ultimately, the choice is still up to you. Find the time to go out and try out the basses. Make your decision based on the sound and feel of the basses. Since you're still new to bass, it'll be good if you can get a more experience person down to help you with your choice.

By the way, both are pretty respectable choices, especially the BBs.

..

imho

if you're a beginner, you shd set your budget first. from there get your instrument according to your budget, and then try out the ones within your budget. find the instrument you're most comfortable with. then practise, jam, study, feel, learn, apply.

yeahhh, since you can choose between the two, it would be worthwhile trying out both of them first, and perhaps making a list of things which you like about each, and what you dont like about each.

then maybe you can tell us what you think after trying out both of them -)

i personally think you might get more out of the Yamaha in the quality of the instrument, but do check out bensjo's thread, he uses a squire as well and i think he really likes it. some Squires actually sound even better than say an MIM Fender -)

Actually for a starter you should just get a bass and start learning first. If you ask me .. get the Yamaha .. they're good stuff.

Your preferences and taste will change over time ... so i think it's a matter of playing and finding your own tone that you like. I'm a jazz bass convert already ..=P ..

the SUB bass advocate says: the SUB isn't a stingray but it's one heck of a bass...

I think some of the guys here posted very helpful tips. But Alka...I'll be straightfoward:

Do you know what you want? If not, try to start with what you'd like :)

Guideline for beginners to choosing a bass:

1) Like the sound?
2) Easy to play or not?
3) Does it fit the types of music you'd like to play / or already like to play?
4) Does it look butt ugly to you? Or more steamy than some women out there? (Sorry ladies but... )

I used to think point (4) is not so important. But somehow its the main reason why guys look elsewhere for greener pastures *cough* i mean look for prettier basses...

I agree with pt 1 & 4. For me not just sound good but shd also look gd.
Shd research a while before jumping to get the bass?

Cheers,

Ben

i started out with no. 4 being a strong factor in buying an instrument, but along the way, the relevance of it diminishes. i pay more attention to playability & tone these days.

i absolutely concur on point 4)...

i actually think it's quite important that u dun feel like throwing up when u sling on ur bass cos it's got so much character (read:ugly)

i would suggest the Yamaha too. Squire... i have my reservations about it. Let's just say if you want a squire, might as well save up a little more for a fender standard.
