where to go for mods/setups

ok, at first i thought i was pretty knowledgeable about some of this stuff, but alas the me who has been playing barely a year plus just realised i probably got ripped off.

If some of you remember i own a BCR masterpiece mockingbird which is heavily modded - all of the mods i did at a guitar shop which is at excelsior hotel, used to be in front of guitar 77 (or rather where G77 used to be) and currently opposite maestro. The guitarshopwhichshallnotbenamed charged me $90 for two coil-split jobs which he completed in 10 minutes, and i thought it was okay.

A while before that, around like, November last year, i sent it in for routing and floyd rose installation, and changing tuners, got charged $500 in all, the ownerofguitarshopwhichshallnotbenamed convinced me that he did give me a big discount.

And a bit while before that, i went into guitarshopwhichshallnotbenamed to shop for a random wah pedal, and me being a newbie managed to be convinced (i am allowing for a whole different degree of polite-language) to shell out $100 for a second hand DAPHON wah which doesn't seem to do anything useful at all. (Of course, it's like a paperweight now)

And random forum post hopping led me to read some horror stories about the guitarshopwhichshallnotbenamed, which led me to greater horror as to was I dumb enough, or unsuspecting enough, to not be able to tell the difference to some of these mods?

So there are 3 questions I have to the SOFTers who are more experienced than I am:
  • How to tell if electronics (ie push pull pot) are cheap/good/bad/lousy/atrocious?
  • How much does routing for a floyd rose on a fixed bridge guitar normally cost?
  • How much should rewiring cost at most?

1. Find someone who knows the stuff to look at em. Or take a picture and post here.
2. $500 sounds reasonable. Provided it was a good job and the tuning is stable.
3. Depends on who's doing it.

I assume that the $500 included parts as well ?
or did you bring your own FR Trem + Tuners ?
or is it for workmanship only ?

Coil split is a bit steep, but not unreasonable if well done.

Floyd Rose/tuner/routing is cheap if parts are included and well done.

Chorus pedal is a willing seller willing buyer situation.

If it's does not include parts than I would say, you got knock off, obviously it's super expensive.

A soldering job the most they can charge you at $20 to 30, routing only maybe around $100, installing tuners around $20 to 30, all this does not include parts, only workmanship.

:( were my own FR and tuners...

Don't worry dude, that's life, whats done can't be undone, just remember and ask around alot here before you go for anything.

I got qouted SG550/- by a known luthier here for a refretting job for my old guitar. All I say to him is "thks for the info". Obviously it's a knock on the head(Super Expensive) service charge for a refretting job.
With SG550 I can order a new good quality Neck with full fret job from Warmoth. Or I can buy my own fretting tools cheaper and DIY myself.

haha i think most will know which shop you are refering to.

i personally think their prices are reasonable but im not happy with their service.
the tone pot they provided for me died in less than a month. im stuck with a faulty tone pot now.

Depends on who quotes that. :)

For $550, if the quality is insane and the properly done - then yes. Moreover, sometimes, you don't want to alter your tone equation (woods and stuff).

I've had a fret job done by an aspiring tech. I can tell you - it was utter nonsense. I wouldn't bother DIY-ing.

..unless it's a setneck guitar like gibson, prs or certain ibanez models . I'll go dat price if it's a good luthier and the fret job is very well done.
Mike of standardmusic (good price) and Malcolm(for your pricey guitar) do great fret jobs

Bro, you mean Standard Value? Yup, Mike is good and his prices are reasonable. Good workmanship also.

Only a RICH kid will say that, Because money is no value.

LoL. That particular "guitarshopnottobename" is the bloody reason
why I took up DIYing all my things.

Kena charged for jobs not even performed.
too naive and trusting, young times...

my friends call that shop the 'con-man shop'
which is why im getting mine done at seekz!

actually from what I've read, you guys are more concerned with the pricing rather than getting a job well done. I understand that most people here are students who are not earning much.

the thing is if its not broken, why fix it?

if the worksmanship is good, why complain about the price you pay? seriously in my opinion you get what you've paid for. I've been to other guitar shops in the past and their rates are super cheap. in the end, that guitar got screwed up quite badly. long story but yeah.

I would prefer to send to a tech who is reliable rather than cheaper. if parts are spoilt just go back and replace, no big issue la really.
