well IMO the nut is more "friendly" to ur strings cos its smoother, it lasts longer cos it kinda self-lubricates, plus it helps u stay in tone more than a regular plastic nut when u use the whammy. but haha, if ur nut isnt causing any problem, why not wait till it needs fixing then change it to the bone nut :D

but how does changing the nut actually improve the sound of the guitar?

To cut a long story short, the direct conduits between your strings and your guitar are the nut and the saddle.

Plastic nuts are softer compared to bone, in being so they 'absorb' some of the strings' vibrations. Bone, being much harder, promotes much better transference of the vibrations to the body.

Better vibrations gives you better tone, well at least most of the time.

Mike @ Standardvalue did my SZR's nut job; it's now bone. as mentioned above, the 2 critical contact points in the guitar are the nut & bridge. these features are the first components to manifest your string vibrations. this effect is more marked if you listen to your instrument unplugged. so the acoustic guitar gets the most benefit from this 'upgrade' compared to amplified + driven tones 8-)
