Hi All,

Does anyone knows where is the best place to set up a bass? I tried a few vendors already well known for the guitar set-up but none have satisfactory result so far....

FYI, my bass in Stingray 5 HH, just in case that any of you knows anyone who is very proficient at handling stingray....

Best Regards

i think i have only ever paid to setup my bass twice... i thought it was very expensive and subsequently learnt how to do it myself. now that i do all my own setup, i still think that it is rather expensive to set up a bass professionally. furthermore, i think an 'ideal' setup is subject to many factors, primarily your playing style, and how hard you pick the strings.

my favourite instructional site (from which i eventually learnt from) is this
http://www.garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassmanual/setupmanual.html

but that was before youtube's popularity skyrocketed. you might be able to find a good instructional video on youtube, but this site is as detailed as it gets.

i usually do my own set-up but if i just bought the bass, i get a luthier to go thru it to check on it for warped necks, relief the neck, etc.. and subsequently i will set-up myself.

Hi Guys, sorry for the late reply....

@Alanchia : I don't think it's ethical to disclose this information, hahahha, anyway those I've consulted before is quite renowned, and they normally do a great job, it's just that in this case, My stigray just doesn't feel right, but I don't know exactly why.

@Cool-Beans : Heard quite a lot about TYMC, next time for general service I'll come to them.

@Shinobi : Wow cool link dude, but I think I'll keep it as a reference, I cherish my stingray too much to do trial and error work.

@5StringWonder : Yah, had Malcolm worked on my gear, so far so good.

i've had it done professionally a few times, that's because I have no idea how to do it, but during the setup session, i just learn, now I can do it all by myself.

so it's ok to have a pro do it for you, then learn then do yourself later on

the problem is when doing myself is i don't have access to various measurement tools, like measuring the radius of the fretboard and then use that to check with the curvature of the strings across the fretboard.

where can one buy a tool like that?

also for intonation adjusting, you'll need a prettty accurate tuner too.

so you also have to get the right tools too.

If you're on a budget, an affordable setup with good results would be Standard value at Woodlands....If you're willing to pay and want quality setup you can contact Malcolm. Coincidentally, when I sent my basses to him, I realized he lived just across me in the next block :p
