When do we start buying cymbals?

Perhaps this question hasn't really been brought up before cos' we take it for granted all drummers buy cymbals on SOFT? However, I'm a relatively new user on SOFT. When do we actually spend money on cymbals?

For home practice? Pricey Cymbals? Professional Series?

Or when your band is taking off?

Of course, those with lots of dough no need say la huh?

But for the rest, pls free to bombard me with your opinions! Thanks!

hi there drumsolo,

i guess it does depend on the individual.

one of the key factors will be, are you buying a drumset when starting out? this is because, you will be faced with buying cymbal decision sooner.

If you normally practice on pad at home and jam in studio, you can slowly acquire a piece or two of cymbals first. In this case, better to buy something you really like and perhaps it may not be something that cheap, but will last u 10-20 years or more.

If you buy a drumset at home, u need to get cymbals fast, and may not have $$$ to part with for a set of cymbals ( include hihat, crash ride etc.) that may set u back 1k+ or more. u may have to settle for cheaper cymbals then u have to upgrade in the long run.

the rest, pls take over... lol!

drumsolo, more qns pls feel free to ask ... h=cheeers

ahhhahhhhhahhahhh.....

sori if this sound bad, but i'm just sitting here and smiling and wondering...
DUDE!!!! WAT A QUESTION!!!!!!

eh eh eh.. sorry eh, just cant help it....

wat i know, ppl who buy drumsets will most of the time, if not always, find problems, or uninterested in the sound by the stock cymbals that usually comes wif the set, then thats where you find the need to buy cymbals....
just like wat my bro alfe @ plainsman wrote...
hee heeee.....

for me, no drumset at home (dont laugh!) but i got 2 pairs of hats, 1 ride and 13 cymbals, splash included..... so wat u think of that???
and i will usualli bring my cymbals when i jam, depending on wat band i'm jamming wif, wat songs i'm playing, i will choose the appropriate cymbals due to their different sound for that jam.....

the reason being, i'm particular, mostly, wif the cymbal sound, altho i know the drum sound does play a part ah...
but for me, if the cymbal sound damn sucky in the studio, i moodmeter will plunk all the way low.... no mood to jam oredi liao...

so its not really a matter when its the best to buy cymbals

at wat stage of drumming are u at?
if ur a beginner get a drum pad first and a pair of brushes.
if ur band is taking off and ur sure of the sound ur going for, get the best u can afford.
basically if ur sure of ur sound and u know wat u want, u shld get the best deal forur money

my best bet to you is get a great snare and cymbals first.... but the first thing a begineer should get is what blurred say, a practise pad and sticks...

brushes how to play on a rubber surface bro??

well thinking abt it even though u got wonderful cymbals and a great kit.
e practice pad is always good.

1. its portable
2. good for warm ups
3. its silent.(depends on wad kinda pad)
4. it can help train ur hands ,fingers etc.

so ya i feel prac pad is always good to hav 1

no lah, brushes i prac on anything man table lah chairs lah. any surface thts smooth.

and brushes are for co ordination excercise were u wanna hear something other than ur snare. so u can hear if ur limbs are hitting properly

Thanks all my drumming friends, it's really good to hear. I especially noticed the comment by DullTheater. I do not have my own drum set at home too. Been on drums for almost 4 years, own a practise pads and several pair of sticks and air drumming la.

I'm kinda particular of my cymbal sounds too, and sad to say, up till this point of time I haven made a serious effort on getting my first cymbals. Glad to have some many opinions coming in. Thanks for the pointers!

oh... noticed my comment...
hope you not angry by the first few lins which i wrote.... hee hee

anyway, to make you feel happier, i've been air drumming for about 12 years, but dont be mistaken ah, mi still young, below 30! hahahahah
air drumming for 12 years, been really jamming after NS but only start buying cymbals last year oct like that....

so no worries about your numbers, it will come naturally when youre playing and jamming wif your band
you will start to find and buy cymbals that will suit your ears and of coz your band/genre/songs type

in the meantime too, if youre finding it hard to decide on wat type of cymbals sounds u looking for, ie bright, dark, blah blah blah, u shud tell us wat type of music... den we may be able to help you out of your cymbals' choice...

one thing i got to add too, is trust your ears.....
meaning, when somebody say that this particular brand is good and to shun away from other brand, then you go and buy that...
then that is just wrong dude..... you must test varieties of cymbals before deciding to buy.. take your time, dont be impulsive.....

unless you wanna be like my bro Drum Hobbyist (wif my most most utmost respect to him), who got like 100 over cymbals......... wah seh.. he power!!!!

I actually reserved the A custom hats with MrSoftie already. I play in a band with mainly pop, rock, alternative as influences currently. Personally I do not like something which is too bright, with a liking for darker sounds.

Perhaps I might be getting some crashes something soon? You guys want chip in your 2 cents worth?
I've noticed Steve Gadd's K Custom Session Crash and the K Custom Dark Crashes as possible candidates. Paiste Signature Crashes are nicey too. I'm not so familiar with Sabian's crashes? The HHX series?

What about other brands? I need something not too cutting, be enough to be heard in a band setting.

Sabians.. if u want something that is not so loud, try the HH series...

Many zildjian users have chosen the Vault crashes rather than using the A customs... dunno why but the vault are reaaaalllly niceeeee....

im loving my 20" Vault Crash... even the size, it's not really as loud as the HHX if u crash it one after the other...

rides go for raw bell dry ride HH..
