Hi all! I would really like to hear everyone's opinions on the following distortions, how u PERSONALLY would rate the pedal, its tonal qualities, and any views and thoughts that u could share here. Also out of the 4, what would be your preferred choice on styles of alternative rock, hard rock, blues and jazz.

the PROCO RAT in all its manifestations, has a certain degree of fuzz at higher drive settings.

do consider the MXR Distortion III

MI crunchbox for shiokness!! its a distortion that will blow you away even when gain is set at 1oclock+.. at max...
GLORIOUS.

but its not a versatile pedal, and people buy it mostly for its kickass heavy distortion.. hope this helps u narrow your search? but do try it..

DS1 isnt as good as its former models anymore, maybe a modded one will do justice.

i've tried the Crunchbox- it's intense distortion alright, but it's not 'heavy'.

Crunchbox has a very compressed sound imo. Very evident in recording.

Too much mids in my opinion. Its not intense high gain. I've sold it away.

Sansamps will handle all the genres mentioned by the threadstarter. Either the Classic or the GT-2.
