What's the deal with Rimshots and Bells.

Doing rimshots too often really kills your drumsticks fast.. Or maybe i'm hitting too hard. These Promark Will Kennedy sticks that I've only used for about about 6-7hours of drumming are already half-dead. Chips on the body everywhere and the heads on both sticks have a slice of it gone (one side is now flat).

OT abit but anyone can recommend sticks (around 5A size) that last longer? No oaks please, I find them way too heavy.

hehe bro, will kennedy sticks spoil easily. i don't know what's up with the sticks too, but playing with the sticks for a while will already give you "results" - dents and after a while, the tip will chip off. i don't get that problem with 5A or even 7A... only 5AS will kennedy signature models.

and yah, rimshots will kill your sticks overtime, its a "price" you have to pay for a nicer sound.

What's the difference in sound between different types of snare SHELLS(edited) when performing rim shots?

what do you mean by snare casings?? as in wood shells vs metal snares issit?

not too sure about it, more experienced bros pls correct me.. but if im not wrong metal shells'll give you a ringier sound compared to wooden snares.

i think about this matter must ask alfe... he said he's bandmates had to go ear surgery after a jamming session if im not wrong hahahah...

rimshot until stickts breaks.!

Sorry! I meant shells haha. Couldnt think of the correct term :(

Was alfe the one who's guitarist had
Quote "Liquid oozing out of his ears" Unquote

After he did the rimshot?

yah

i was younger and more violent once.... sigh, i had just discovered rimshot back then ofter one of my lessons with jerry.

it was a cadeson 14x5.5 aluminium snare (i still have it, in case you're wondering)

i would say by virtue of its material properties, metal shell snares ring and crack are loudest and most piercing.

brass is typically very prized for this property. bell brass, is the ultimate.

but, crack loudest and most piercing doesn't mean everything.

i'm a very big fan of boris williams, the cure drummer from '88-92. he particularly liked a wood snare he bought, and because of its very earthy properties it had this really warm comfy crack in the rimshot. It still rings pretty nice, i presume its the metal hoops.

For now, this ringing thing is still a bit of a mystery to me. I thought wooden shell with wooden hoop surely little or no ring, but lo and behold, listen to akira jimbo. his snare can ring alot when he wants it to.

hmm... interesting! maybe in will's case... he asked the manufacturers to use a wood that is softer (less dense) it might be maple instead of hickory! (need to confirm this)

looking at how will plays, he won't have a problem with stick break. even when he play loud, he uses mostly finger technique. it comes out sweet, its his style man.

i quite like the feel of maple sticks, but end up i still use hickory cos more lasting and by virtue of the density it give more solid whacking.

hmm i have a few pairs with me now.. i like the feel lah so im using them despite their shorter life spans.

its american hickory, but what i realised last time was that the 5AS sticks have a rougher and "unfinished" look as compared to other promark sticks. There're significantly more splinters sticking out and the tip looks more splintered too.

SideTrack a little here -

Bro Alfie The Cadeson Maple Dum Kit (though made in Taiwan) is a very good drum kit...I tried this kit before..and I like the Lugs (Gold and small ones) - looks like a Yamaha Maple Custom from far - It's a Value For Money Kit...Is there anyone Marketing this Drums here in Singapore?
