What setup you use when doing recording on PC?

Used to have korg Ax100G so no big issue , plugged to line/mic in of my soundcard and thats all. But I've moved on to single pedals and not quite sure how to do it. From previous experiences, plugging the pedals direct to the PC gave quite a terrible sound, so what else do I need to have/do? Was thinking of an amp simulator, but what kind? Not looking at those audio interfaces coz of budget and I think my X-fi extrememusic is sufficient. I've got a basic idea of how to connect a mixer to the PC from this website

i don't work for line6 or city music.
but apparently I've seen how toneport UX1/UX2 works and it's considered pretty good for its cost. $300 and you get 2 mic preamps (depending on model) , mic pre modeling cab modeling etc etc

I've mentioned this gear over and over again because I haven't seen anything more cost efficient. unless you're doing multitrack drums quality recording then i'd recommend presonus firepod (which is like near to $1K or somewhere there)

if you buy a mixer it'll cost you close to toneport's pricing. or at least half.

i'm sure korg AX1000G sounded fine when D.Ied into soundcard because its got its own amp simulator (if i'm not wrong), but if you're going to use single pedals like Boss DS-1/MT-2. it's gonna sound like your guitar plugged into a microwave. sansamp GT-2 can do D.I also. but it's a little costly. but the sound plugged into an amp is good.

your call hehe

Currently has someone who might be able get me a Boss GP-20. Toneport is exclusively for PC but I'm looking for something that can also play direct through my speakers too(designed more or less like a monitor speakers). Also in the near future want to get a drum machine, thats why I went for a mixer. I don't really need a DI box if I got a mixer right?

then what you need is an amp simulator for your guitars (something cheap maybe anything from zoom 505II or behringer vamp 2.0)

Bass you can D.I i guess.

drum machine (2 outputs)

vocal mic > xlr cable (1 output)

5 channeled (check the XLR inputs and 1/4jack inputs) mixer that can support the above (needs more channels if keyboards included)

if on a low budget, try something from behringer. i bought a 5 xlr channel mixer for $215.

Got a mixer I bought from fellow softie, so thats settled. I might go for korg ax3g if I cant get the GP-20. My main problem is an amp simulator I guess. The rest should not be that hard to figure out.
