I want to get a distortion pedal but i'm not sure which one to get. I'm interested in the BOSS pedals. I want a NIRVANA type sound. i know kurt cobain used DS2 turbo distortion but i was told that metal zone would be better. what do you think?

You shud be able to try out the pedals at sweelee/luther or any guitar shop that sell boss pedal. The metal zone will sound the same regardless of any guitars you used. If you are into the hi gain, scooped mid and sharp treble, then go for the MT-2. The DS-2 or even DS-1 is a decent pedal. But dont expect it to sound like what you hear in the album of those "rock star" who used it. A ds-1/2 thru a practice amp will sound rather harsh, tiny and lack of bottom end. Same goes to the metal zone thru a practice amp. End of the days, try out the 2 pedals, trust your ears and buy what you like :D

personally i've always hated the metal zone. The scooping is so extreme, you can never get a proper fat tone. in the past most metal albums exhibited this trend, metallica, megadeth, etc. But nowadays you'll be hard put to find an album that sounds like this.

Helloz…

I’ve given up on all distortion pedals simply because they interfere with the original guitar signals too much. If you pay a premium for your guitar & had the pickups swapped for you dream Dimarzio/ Duncan/ whatever, the best way to get an impressive overdrive tone is to plug straight to the amp. I can’t overemphasize the importance of investing in an amp with a very good onboard overdrive. This is purely personal because whatever’s ear candy to you may be aural bile for the rest. So do well to shop around for one that you favour, regardless of the brand name.

However, if your limit yourself to a 15W amp strictly for bedroom practise, then do well to check out other pedals than the conventional Metal Zone. No offence to all MT users, I am an owner of this black box too, it’s just that I revere this pedal too much BEFORE I heard good amps. Then I realized that overdrive pedals get in the way of good tones, period. If you have to get a pedal, then consider the following:

· Ibanez- Smash Box (from the Tonelok series)
· Danelectro- Black Coffee (one of the fiercest mini pedals around)
· Marshall- Jackhammer (the sound of an angry JCM beneath your feet)
· Zoom- Tri-metal (the most impressive analogue unit from Zoom)
· Danelectro- Black Paisley (the ultimate metal deception- forgive the design, embrace the tone- I don’t think it’s available in S’pore… yet)
· DOD- Death Metal (wretched menace with unfortunate bass limitations)

Refer to the following link & read the Danelectro Black Paisley review:

Finally- good luck, hope you won’t end up buying a pedal… juz kidding…

+1 to what Subversion said. Many people are too obcessed to get the "Holy Grail" of tone or the sound of their favourite bands with pedals alone. The fact is that it cannot be achieved without a good amplifier as well. After I bought my Mesa/Boogie F-30 amp, I have never used any pedals for my distortion. Pure tube drive.

I agree with subversion, i own also own a mt 2. I use this for more gain but true nice overdrive comes from the amp itself. unless you want a distortion, get a pedal.

tube overdrive or distortion(for amp with hi gain channel) often sounds better at a moderate loud volume(unless with a attenuator). If just a bedroom player, od or distortion pedal might be the way to get close to the tone that one like or hear in their mind, within the room that is. Hope super_punk wont get confused with the tube distortion, OD or tube amp and stuff. He just want a distortion pedal isnt it :D

Personally, i have a 50watt tube combo and a low wattage tube amphead which have brillant clean tone, but i still prefer a od or distortion pedal when i need the crunch or heavy distortion. Nice overdrive does not necessary comes from overdriving a tube amp imho(the volume enough to make my neighbour burn down my house  ). A nice boutique od pedal or even a boss od pedal might do the job well too. That is if its give you the tone that you are after. My 0.02cent :D

Try either.

Even though you might wanna try stuff like Nirvana, since you're settling for a DistPedal, might as well settle for Boss MT2 or Zoom TriMetal. They give you a gd range of DistSoundz with the various genre of music. I'd settle for the TriMetal, as gd pricing as MT2 but more crunch factor. Nicer if used with Equaliser. Be gd to purchase from LutherMusic. They got gd deal for Zoom TriMetal.

Kurt Cobain used DF2, Super Feedbacker and Distortion... i used to have 2 of those.. but sold it off... it's out of production...

But if u want something like him.. the vintage rat or the other rats might be good buys... just my 1 cent worth... :D

Why don't you try to get your own sound. Go to luthermusic or swee lee and try out their pedals. Maybe you'll find something even better than nirvana's sound.

Hmm...if im not wrong Cobain used a Sansamp gt2/classic on the muddy banks to get his sound. in any case the sansamp boxes give a pretty convincing distortion modelled after tube setups like marshall and mesa. not the same, but close.
