the bass is often regarded as the 'glue', but remember, the glue is used to stick two objects together. usually its the guitars and the drums. there is so much emphasis on coordinating with the drummer but i dont think enough has been said about complementing the guitarist, especially if you are aiming to take your play to a higher level.
sure, you can stick with root notes, but the same can be said about the guitarist sticking with chords. and then the drummer can play it safe and do a simple 4/4 beat, + root notes + POWER chords and all 'locking' together. you know what i'm getting to
