Monitor speakers are simply "personal" speakers which are placed right next to you when you are performing on stage. For a bigger venue, there is usually a stage sound engineer that is stationed right next to the stage to handle all the sounds balancing in your monitor. Dont confuse him/her with the sound engineer that take care of the house speakers.
The reasons why musicians need monitor speakers on stage is simply because musicians need to be able to hear everybody on stage and more importantly in REAL time. This is especially so for drummer and bassist when performing in an outdoor venue with big stage.
During sound check, I usually ask the sound engineer to send the entire 'balance' band mix into my monitor, (although it is not uncommon that some sound engineer will ask you "stupid" questions like what do you need on your monitor) and after the first run through, I will then request the sound engineer to balance things up. A good sound engineer will usually come behind to check out your monitor mix when you are playing.
The key to balancing the monitor is always try to listen to channels which are too loud instead of always thinking the others are too soft. The reason for doing this is because sometime as musician, we can get overwhelmed by the stage and big sound that you end up playing too hard and get exhausted after the first 2 songs.
Another important thing to note is to make sure ALL the band members in your band has some drums mix in their monitor when playing on big stage. many musicians always have this thinking that drum is loud enough, I can hear them from the back of my ear, all I need is my vocal and guitars.
The question here is not about hearing it, it is about hear the drum in REAL time. As a drummer, you are the time keeper and you need everybody in the band to be hitting the note at the exact sametime, not split second behind due to the echo effect. Most of the time, what they need will just be hi-hat and kick.
