What goes with the pedals?

Hey guys, I'm interested in buying an effects pedal but I'm really clueless as to how pedals function. When u guys started off with ur first pedal, what other accessories did u buy along with it? (eg. cables)

Then how do u go about connecting the pedals to the amp? Sorry I sound like a total idiot here, but I really got no clue about pedals. Also for the benefit for anyone else around here who wants to know.

it's usually:

guitar--->pedals---->amps.

you use a cable to connect them. if its pedal to pedal, use patch cables. and get an adaptor while you're at it. saves money rather then having to buy 9v batteries every week.

Effects pedals change the sound of your guitar. Like if you use a distortion pedal, you can get the distortion effect. Acutally, you could surf around and check out the soundclips of any effects pedals from their websites and you'll know how an efxs work in no time  (and at the same time you'll know the rough market price for it)

To connect the pedal to the amp, connect your guitar to the input of the pedal, and connect the output of the pedal to the amp using cables. So for guitar -> 1 effect pedal -> amp, you need 2 cables.

Nah, you're not a total idiot, you're a guitar god in the making! 8) Rockon!

haha thanks shredded. Oh well, no harm tryin' em pedals anyway, swee lee mid year sale coming up. Might do some pedal shopping :D

often, the first pedals u get wont stay with u cos ur ears will be able to diffrentiate the good sounding ones vs the crap..anyway back to the point.

use the pedals as a gauge to how u want ur tone to sound like.

they process the signal from ur guitar to ur amp, adding or reducing qualities of the tone.

in simple terms, these are the basic pedals u would want to experiment with first:

distortion/od -> add harshness to the sound
wah -> boosts(as in 'make louder') a particular frequency
reverb -> creates a sound with depth that's adjustable to ur liking, emulates grand hall/huge concert guitar playing

these are the few types of pedals that should get u going :)

May I know if you have got more then 1 pedals, do you have to get all the adaptors for it or just one is needed to power all the pedals?

If you don't know jack-shit about pedals, the best thing you can do is buy a good multi-effects pedal like from Zoom or whatever.

experiment, try everything out. once you have decided on the effects you like the best....go buy the individual pedals that claim to be superior in that particular field.

then array them with proper patches and you'll be sitting pretty.
