what effect to use for....help needed

im asking this question for my bassist..
we r 3 piece band..we cover band like creed,audioslave,muse..
currently my bassist dont use any effect pedal..
i suggest him to use a pedal especially when covering muse..
anyone know what kinda effect muse bassist use for song like hysteria for example..i really find its important for him to use effect since im the only guitarist in the band...and my bassist know nothing about bass effect..

Start with a multi effect, that's usually the best way to get acquainted with them. Specifically, for Hysteria, it's essentially a Big Muff into a Akai Deep Impact but in lieu of that it's basically synth bass distorted.

for starters, get a good multi-efx pedal like the Boss ME-50B or Korg or Zoom ones. usually they have presets in them that alrdy sound somewhat like muse's tone but not exactly it. you might evnetually be able to tweak it to sound like the original if you know how.

also your bassist might like to read up on effects online. there is a lot of help available in websites. just go google it and u'll find good links to read up on.

It's not just distorted synth bass... there's another layer after that because if you listen carefully you can hear a higher-frequency filter over the distortion.

I can approximate a Hysteria-kind of tone with my Zvex Woolly Mammoth into a Fulltone Bass-Drive into a Ibanez LF7 (because there's really no more space for a Deep Impact! I'd get one if there was), but obviously it doesn't have the extra icing on top. This is his entire Absolution-era signal chain:

maybe all i want from them is 4 4x10, 2 4x15, and 2 2x18/20 woofers.
