The Gretsch Catalina Club is quite a good kit. I had tried a display set at Luther once and I'm impressed by the bassdrum- solid and powerful sounding. If you are looking for a typical jazz kit, i.e. 18" BD, 12" tom and a 14" FT, and do not want to cost you a bomb to purchase one, then this kit is the one!
Eventhough this is a Gretsch kit, don't expect it to produce the legendary "The Gretsch Sound" from the 50s' and 60s'. This is a kit maufactured using asian mahogany wood, and not maple wood. Therefore, the lower in price. Nevertheless, this is a good kit to buy. In fact, there was a time I was so tempted to buy it myself. But I'm now thinking of saving more money to buy a Gretsch Maple kit in the typical jazz sizes
Ranking Sports is the authorised dealer for Gretsch drums, therefore buy from them if you are thinking of buying a brand new set becoz Gretsch offers a 1 year warranty on all drums purchased from the authorised dealer. Also, they sell it cheaper than Luther does. Luther was selling it for sightly more than S$1K, whereas Ranking was selling it at about S$950.
From the last information I got from Ranking, there's no more stock with them and they are not too sure went new drums are coming in. Also, the new Catalina Club will be more expensive than the last shipment.
According to Gretsch website, they had developed a newer version of the Catalina Club, called the Gretsch Catalina Club jazz. A few improvements were made, e.g. the BD depth had been reduced from 16" to 14", which is a typical depth of a beop kit (18" x 14").
Hope the information helps.
