jsut asking...wad kinda scales should i learn? i know 5 basic ones....major, minor, Pentatonic, blues and Minor Pentatonic...thou im not pretty sure of the various ways u can play the scales like the....pentatonic that sortta stuff... so wad scales ya all learn?

actually pentatonic scale is the most easiest scale to remember.as long as u remember the pattern , u can play it anywhere on the fretboard.

for me i usually learn minor pentatonic and major scales.

well it never hurts to learn more scales..i guess u could start learning all 5 shapes of the minor pentatonic so in any key you'll know what to play all over two octaves worth of frets..then start learning other scales then progress to modes...

hmm..u could either get a good scale book or search online for free lessons..i'm sure there are dozens of good free guitar lesson sites around...

say dudes..

lets say i've already memorized the 5 basic scales..

i know that i can sort of place each of these scales on any fret on the neck..problem is, how do i come up with a nice melody spanning thru the fretboard?

appreciate ur help guys

thx

I guess thats where you've gotta let your creativity do the work! If you have a melody running in your head, just dump it onto the fingerboard with your scaling patterns for support and there you have it!

i've been practising minor pentatonic and the locrian mode. i'm still a noob... the pentatonic is enough to me actually...look at slash..

ya..but your playing tends to get predictable after awhile, unless you think up of ways to sound different with the same scale..playing in other scales and modes, esp modes, give you a totally different sound so you won't sound boring after awhile....

You've got to have the basic pentatonics before you start learning more scales. Melodic and harmonic minor are two very cool and useful scales. There is no point just learning one mode, you may as well learn 'em all, it isn't that much work and after you will be able to add so much more to your songs.

^^i think he meant modes

i find memorising scales a pain in the ass. For me. i would usually just whack random notes on the fretboard for quitea while, then try to get use to the sound of the different intervals( like notes 1 step or 2 steps apart) and also be able to anticipate or recognise how the different intervals will sound like. I think thats good enough?
and slash is more of the minor scale then pentatonics

hahaha....i see i do that...yup it works....but i kinda did my theory grade 5? yea...hahaha then scales seem to be kinda effective....like when i wana make a solo? it seems to be working...but the prob is most of them sound the same la...haha

to me, modes scales came real handy when i read guitar mag( total guitar, guitar player) where they explain the style of players..
