Vox AD30VT Valvetronix or Fender Blues Junior

tks all for the reply. I am only looking at this 2 models to limit my headaches.

The more i read about the reviews and opinions, the more confused i get. I hv quite a discerning ear and would like the best tone possible.

Fender BJ - Very nice sounding amp(tube), relatively small, solid and simplistic (ntg fancy), should go well with my 9yr old am std strat. its 800-900 and made in USa

Vox - New tech, amazing modelling options. Built in effects, cheap - was quoted below way below 400 (less than 1/2 px), decent sound. Dunno abt you, but material feels a bit cheap. Dun need to buy additional effects and i could buy a LR baggs DI for my acoustic and still get loose change.

Still considering.....i'm usually a buyer on impluse and i am afraid that i cannot last till CNY haha

And most of all - wife is using reverse pyschology on me (Buy Lor....) but i know she will frown on all this GASsing

tks, it has been a healthy discussion.

The Vox is made in China. There are LOADS of horrible reviews on the reliability and the build on all the new Vox amps on Harmony-Central.

Since you are have a discerning ear, go try out the amps.

Long ago I thought such and such amps sounded good, and would post on forums saying how good they were.

Then I tried out the big boys.
59' Fender Bassman
Fender Super Twin
Roland Jazz Chorus
Carvin Nomad

To me, the Vox Valvetronix is crap. I'd rather get the pathfinder.

But in terms of versality, compactness and everything you would want (except for tone) in a practice amp, you might want to get the Valvetronix.

Do yourself a favour, bring your Strat down to Swee Lee. Try out the 59' Bassman. You will be blown out of your mind at the tone (happened when i played a strat through it for the first time). But it costs a whopping $2600 (before discount) Then go to the nearby Guitar Workshop and try out the 2nd hand Peavey Classic 50 they have there. It lacks the sparkle of the Bassman but its going for $950. THEN, go to try out the Vox Valvetronix again. Then post here and tell us about the experience.

good choice. only how u gonna get the cabinet and speakers to go with it.

+ the head. it comes chassis only and I would like a handle & cover.

octane i considered but i would -really- want something that is possible for me to bring out and play as well, say in a gig, possibly miked up.

gonna do some research on these stuff. obviously Singapore just doesn't have the quality stuff. no point coupling a good head with crap speakers. i'm still lurking in the 18watt forum trying to absorb all the data.

it's a bit early to say now though since I dont have the moolah. I reckon this head + cab combo will cost in excess of 1.2K SGD.

ok lah OT liao. back to topic.

the bassman is -just- not feasible for home usage lah. :P

i agree though - i hate the valvetronix. if u're not picky about dynamics and natural crunch, maybe u could go for that. but i AM very picky. and i can't use the built in attenuator for nuts before i lost tone.

and i still hate the jazz chorus. there are tube amps with better headroom than that, and the jazz chorus seems to hate distortion.

Amp will mostly be used for home and jamming sessions, ntg big. i dun need too big and amps even tho i dun stay in a hDB flat.

tks

ya.. ok my last line sounded a bit confusing. i meant to say there are tube amps, not other tube amps... sorry about that.

if u could run dual amps, a jazz chorus and a distortion oriented amp would be awesome. :)

yes - for the first batch i think. read HC with a pinch of salt though. u can see they stress Made in China more often than ever.

between the 2 u listed, u gotta decide - 1 good tone or many varying tones?

i second what theblueark says - try out the big boys first. then decide how high you want your amp quality to be. there's always a tradeoff somewhere in between the lines of price, quality, reliability and versatility.

I dun really want to be tempted. Truth is that if i fall in love with the big boys, the credit card get out real fast. Trust me, i've done it before...(watches, cameras, gadgets, guitars...u get wat i mean)

i want to limit my ears to the best within the orice range and i like how these 2 looked. So its value for money or tone....

Well with that in mind I would advise going with the Fender BJ for tone.

It would be a better idea to pay a bit for something of quality that would be more likely to satisfy you in the long run than to pay less for something that you might end up wanting to replace sometime down the road.

Think about your AmStd strat for example and how it's still a quality instrument that you'd be happy to pick up and play.

Besides, like some pple have already pointed out, I think you'd already have at least 1 or 2 OD/Dist pedals in your collection to add versatility to the great basic tone of the Fender.

And yes, I remember a time when US made Fenders were in the $1k price range. Sigh.

I think u need to identify a few things here before chosing your amp.

1. Wattage
2.Tone type
3.Physical size
4.Price

It would be a great help if u can tell us more.Must be focused even when GASing. No point in us giving u recommendations even though its not wat u really want.

think you should just get the fender blues junior and be done with the GASsing.. that would be my choice too if i had 1k to spend on an amp.

I think a Carvin may be too loud for your home. it's 50W full tube.

Agree with Timex. Know what you want, try them out first if you can, then seek a second opinion regarding quality and reliability issues.

The Carvin Nomad you can try out at Music Theme.

I fell head over heels in love with it when I played it. But my friend next to me thought it was just "not bad". But then he's more of a AC30 guy.

The Nomad has a very harmonically rich tone, and very thick. But sometimes to the point of being a little muddy. It depends on the pickups and guitar you are using. The drive channel on it I'm not too happy with but there are some mods you can do to improve it. Personally I'd use effects to drive the clean channel.

I'm waiting for the Visual Sound Workhorse amps to come in around April to see how they sound, or I'd be getting the Nomad.

The one at Music Theme is $1250, or you can order a new one from Ranking for $1300 and Carvin will ship one over. And yes it's 50W and is LOUD.

was thinkin the whole day and wondering if the extra 500 buxs if worth it betw the two. Does the diff in tone justify the price. Besides, the fender does not have an ouput......sigh

with the extra 500 bux, i can donate to charity for needy students, buy nice cables.....picks, a wah pedal......

btw, anyone know where i can get VOX wah pedal

Might want to consider the Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue. I'm hearing good reviews for it. The AC15CC might be worth alook as well. 15 watt class A with Celestion alnico blue.

Vox Wah. V847? City Music. It's not true bypass though so unless you want to mod it for TB, I'd look elsewhere.

Hi all,

- I want a amp that is not too heavy
- Sounds good even at low - medium volume...
- oozz tone...
- anything under 50W
- <1k.

I've tried the carvin tdy..........must say i might break my budget. The tone is fab and the overdrive in the 2nd channel...delicious...prob save another month of pay first...sigh,
