oh yea.. got a noob qn to ask, sm58 cannot use to sing karaoke at home arh?

Shure SM58 can be use for home karaoke. Just get the correct cable to connect to your sound system. Most home karaoke system uses the 1/4 inch connector, like the guitar jack.

So, the cable is XLR on one end and 1/4 inch on the other. Please check the connection before getting the cable.

Sorry for my ignorance but I don't seem to remember vocalists using effects, like the effects pedals for guitars, during 'live' performances.

Is it unpractical or it's just because there's rarely use for it?

I am thinking of those vocoders (Vocoder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

Do they exist in pedal form or are they just software-based?

SM 58 is not very good at this price now, but everywhere is SM 58. Buy one and make sure you sound good with it.
