Videography allowed?

I dont frequent esplanade outdoor so i just need to know if videography is allowed or not? allowed for certain bands or not allowed at all?

How about gigs at pubs and stuff, just need to know, i am just an enthu for videography.

Dont wanna get sue for any legal issues so do enlighten me, Thanks and appreciated

juz now i was at the esplanade deputy siren album launch. it seems that the esplanade staff approaches anyone who are filming the set (mostly on their hp la) and told them to stop. so, i reckon that videography for esplanade shows are not allowed now, i may be wrong tho.

Oh i see, thanks for the info dude, i guess they are afraid that people might burn the low quality no panning no zooming videos into DVD and sell it to Universal studios.. ha.......ha...... :?

If you need videography for the Esplanande or any other venues, you'd need to write in/ approach the management for permission first.

AY bro, so say a band wanted videographers (just friends), they would have to write into the Esplanade themselves? or go thru their gig organisers? i'm asking cuz i might be taping the One Point Brilliance set which you is organising at the end of April

For the esplanade outdoor sets, I think it depends on the arrangement between the musician/band and esplanade. For the recent Mosaic, I noticed quite a number of people just shooting spontaneously, tourists, locals... They weren't stopped by staff.

in general, videography's not allowed at esplanade. but if you're filming a band, and the staff concern is more on the crowd / possible riot control. they won't give a crap about you filming. because they got a bigger problem on their hands.

I had a warning email from esplanade before. but I still went with it anyway because even esplanade gets to gain publicity from it. just don't use it for commercial purposes , otherwise you'll need to get permit.

as for pubs/clubs, most cases they wouldn't allow too. at most just film and if you get stopped, army teach "when in trouble, act blur" , and go "huh? i donnno I filming for my friend band leh. for personal purpose only. sorri" most cases you'll get to get away with it.

I filmed in a club before @ Centro before it was closed down (now called Babyface) when Crystal Method (USA) came down to spin. got caught though haha. but I tried to negotiate with the duty manager saying "I keep the tape, and I'll never show up and this club ever" and right when he said "no, you cannot keep the tape". i pulled out the DV tape's strips and crushed it infront of him saying "then none of us gets to keep it. 8) neither will I let you use it for your own commercial gain." He could have confiscated my cam too, but because it was Crystal Method, the mediacorp ppl in there filming had a permit (I didn't), and I randomly claimed "there were others without permit inside filming also, so why didn't you catch them? and if I have to lose my cam, I'll talk to your club manager and I'll see to it that you lose your job also."

basic rule is, if you're ready to take risks, means you're ready to go head-on with authorities. and guess what, maybe I did appear to be a tough nut to handle then he made peace with me instead, because i'm not a kid worth risking his rice bowl. a real life situation hopefully next time you won't get into. I was a little scared he'd sent his bouncers to throw me into the merlion river. haha.

don't go ahead without permission lah.

as a production freelancer i'd have to say that it's not about taking the risk to go head to head with authorities.
it's just down right disrespectful lah...
if people don't allow you to film on their premises then it's their right...

well it's 2 sides to every story.

i agree with glentiaw that it's disrespectful because it's their rights and their property. but isn't that a little too arrogant to decline free publicity for your location? i guess on their side is "we don't need your free publicity, we can afford it!"

whereas on the other side is, it's all for good cause to bring up local scene. some of us are dumb heroes to try bend the rules a little for more worthed results. I was a dumb hero who was willing to get scalded a little to show fireworks for the whole world (17,421 to be exact @ my ex-video site) to enjoy.

so basically the moral of my previous post state is, "by right, cannot. by left, can. but it's not right (wrong)" and "do what you want but don't get caught." so don't come back to soft saying it's my fault or whoever that says "it's okay to film they won't chap you one." when you get 0wned by the law.

10¢ worth

video is good.... it would hv been realli great if there is a live sound feet.... but overall it is nice.... i enjoyed it....

as a videographer myself, i think it is always right to just check and get clearance when shooting for an event. i'm sure there are a myriad of different reasons as to why we might get rejected from shooting on premise whether they make sense or not. but yeah. best to cover backside first. they confiscate tape still nevermind, confiscate camera, complain to ISD and they come and confiscate your editing platform. there goes your bread and butter.

anyway, it's also part of the pre-production stage. it's always nice to have the "all-access" immunity, then you can shoot without fear, and i think it will show in your work.

but even with such clearance, it's always good to respect and appreciate your surroundings as well. doing weddings, it was wise to not get in the way of photographers, or even get in the way of the bridal party. you don't wanna be the center of attention right?

hey James, saw the video. nice camera work, you guys have your own jibs or did you rent them? i did all this in uni last time and also do some casual stuff here (but stopping soon, starting full time work this monday) www.redsports.sg/redsportstv

what're your shooting and editing schedules like? if you don't mind can PM me some details? wanna keep honing my chops too :) and would love to learn by collaborating with others. i can probably shoot weekends.

gonna be in ogilvy pr.. so i don't think i'll be doing much production as a profession. but for a hobby, i hope it'll continue :) well, if y'ever need crew for weekend stuff.. i'm sorta available
