Video Editing Software

Haha I see lots of threads bout music editing software here and they've been informative.

Now I'm trying to archive my video files (and also to reload em on youtube no thanks to yngwie malmsteen's management) but I can't seem to find a good video editing software. I've tried windows movie maker but they only export in wmv. Trying to find some freeware like Avid FreeDV but it has been discontinued. =(

Any other cheap/free alternatives you guys can recommend?

You might like to try debugmode's wax. It's fairly featureful, some 3D, text and also can load up avisynth scripts, virtualdub plugs, and opensource freeframe plugins. It works also as a plugin, but really is a little pain in the ass compared to sony vegas.

The 3D app blender, also has an inbuilt editor, but that might be a little too out there.

Then use SUPER convertor to convert to any other format you want if the codec isn't included.

Oh alright, I've searched for Wax and was surprised the file size was only 2mb! Haha will try it out when I get home. No monkey business at work! Esp trolling soft! =P

Gotta check out the super converter, but I understand that most movie file formats are lossy compressions, if I encode the original to a file format and use a converter to encode it again, will there be significant loss in audio/video quality?

Wax doesn't seem to support mp3 as a media file. Are are any other cheap alternatives? Anybody tried Divx Author?

Ah man this is trash... Tried wax, super converter, Divx author.

None of them are good at doing everything I need. ie, import all vid formats for editing eg .mov. able to add simple effects like fade in fade outs to both vid and audio. able to drag audio in time line to manually sync it with video file. able to import mp3. able to export at precise settings eg frame rates, resolution, bit rates and encoder + file type.

Oh okay thanks! Btw, what program are you using? Always wondered how you get those great stuff on youtube!

ac - I don't mind forking out a small sum like $20 to $50 but not too much since I'm not intending to go all out for any professional productions. Just something that would make my youtube uploads less noobish.

I'm getting almost every thing I want with Windows Movie Maker. It just one thing that's bugging me and that's the limitation of it only allowing exporting movies in wmv formats. Not that wmv is bad, but I can't control frames per second, bit rate etc. Would definitely prefer avi files encoded with xvid or divx and having mp3 based audio instead of wmv/wma.

winDV (or there's another small software that does it free) for videocapture.

avisynth+virtualdub with loads of filters.

this won't come in a day or a week. cos I spent more than a year trying to understand fully hahah. see that blueprint animated logo ? years ago, used virtualdub logo filter, every single frame was DIY drawn on MSPAINT manually. i'm no professional, so I gotta do it the hard DIY way.

but seriously virtualdub can only do so much, even the author once replied my email about why can't virtualdub do this and that : "can't expect much from what comes free "

Cinelerra is free software. It's used in commercial, production environments:

Too bad it's not available for Windows. Not to worry, there are still great programs left in the arsenal:

Alright! Gonna check them out slowly now. As for now, I'm just using audacity to record the EQ'ed sound from the .mov files I took with my cam and eporting it into wav.

Use super converter to convert my .mov files into .avi files at roughly the same bit rate w/o sound. Convert the .wav file into .wma file and use windows movie editor to resync the .wma and .avi files and exporting it as high quality (small) option... Results are quite acceptable!

Haha maybe my personal limiting factor ain't so much on programs but rather, its my Nikon 3 mega pix digital camera... How am I suppose to get good quality videos/sounds from a digital camera? haha... Wait till I save enough for a cam corder!
