hey there

i'm wondering if there is any such hardware as a USB keyboard (piano) and its related software which i can use to play the keyboard (piano) through my laptop for use of recording and/or live performance.

if you know of any, can u please let me know as well as indicate the approximate price?

thanks.

usb midi keyboard controller is the easiest thing to find. So no worries bout that at all. A quick search over google with 'midi keyboard controller" you can find tons of info.

As for the softwares that provide the piano sound that you can trigger with the midi keyboard controller, some examples are native instrument's akoustic piano, mixcraft pianissimo, pianoteq, reason's piano refill, true pianos, synthogy's ivory etc. Some of the program are standablone vsti while some need to be run within a daw or its associated program, so if wanna find out more, just google for the names above.

of the couple few piano vsti which i had chance to try out, i like mixxcraft pianissimo coz it sounds good to me, simple to use and less taxing on my computer resources.

Assuming you want a piano feel, Hammer weighted 88 key midi controller, there's Yamaha KX88, maybe $900. But the underneath part is exposed wood!!! The Axioms 88 key midi controller one have garnered a bad reputation.

Or you get a cheap lightweight digital piano like the Casio PX-330/130 ($1300/11-12kg) or something as opposed to a Roland 700 ($3000+/25kg) and connect it to you laptop via USB cable or a Midi to USB cable and voila. Should not need a audio interface if you laptop is like duo core 2.0 or something. Else you might have to get one if there is latency, not likely if you are just using one piano VSTI software.

For software, see

Price range from USD99 onwards.
