Upgrade 12" Amp Speakers?

Hi guys,

I've got a Crate FW15R amp with 12" speakers, I read that upgrading them to celestion speakers will make it sound alot better. So I've got some questions.

1) Is it easily DIY-able? To take out and replace the stock speakers? I'm very newb in these kind of things.

2) Where to purchase (jazzy) celestion speakers locally?

P.S : Do you guys sit infront of the speakers when you're playing at home? Or do you point the speakers away from you and listen to it indirectly? I notice that the speaker sounds more tolerable when I don't hear it from directly infront of it.

Thanks.

1) yes, its just removing and installing , you'd need basic soldering skills
You also need to match the speaker specs properly to prevent blowing stuff out. I'd say get a speaker that matches impedance and one that can handle extra power

2) Get celestions from soundwavesmultimedia , do a google on them. They are a local company.

In addition, if you feel that its more tolerable hearing from the side, then stand towards the side, don't point it directly at you.

Alternatively, you can shape a cotton cloth into a ball, stick it together using tape, and put it infront of the speaker. It acts as a beam blocker. DIY style.

What I do is, I put the speaker facing a corner of a room, so it bounces off the corner walls. I like it that way.

well... my amp is always emo (it faces the wall LOL!)

no more shrilling highs piercing my ears

lightice, THANKS! for the very very informative answer.

I googled "beam blockers" and got the rough concept behind it. How do you hang the cloth ball in the middle of the speaker? Use a string to hang it and drop down from the top of the amp?

You can use velcro, masking tape or anything to attach it. It'll leave marks on the grille cloth. Alternatively, You can use a more professional method, by using a strip of aluminum, drilling 2 holes onto it. Then mount it on the baffle opposite from the speaker

e.g

aluminum / baffle / speaker

Mark the middle, and stick on the ball in the middle.
For ball, you can make a cut out from foam, and attach using contact adhesive

It doesn't have to be a shape of a ball exactly.
It just needs to be half of a ball, the flat side facing outwards.

On the other hand, if you have an unused mic stand. use the mic stand to 'hold' the ball.

A mic stand will cost you around 30 bucks from sim lim, maybe around 10 bucks from cash converters.

If I were to use this and don't want to go through the trouble of drilling and all that, I'd use a mic stand.
