Ubuntu

I use Ubuntu at work. Fast, no virus, free. However, it does need a little of getting used to. All the buttons are placed opposite to that of Windows - so when you are too quick to click, you end up closing programs.

One of my main work machines at work is dual booted with XP and Ubuntu because I need XP for statistics (software only available for Windows). Now getting the rest of the 10 PCs changed over to Ubuntu. Our IT guy is having quite a time...

Gutturalpiss is the expert here in Linux.

Heh I guess using KDE instead of GNOME would do more justice to Windows users..That comes with Kubuntu but can install in Ubuntu also. However KDE by default is like Windows/Mac hybrid so still need some getting used to if you don't like to waste time customising.

Ubuntu > Vista? True
Ubuntu > XP? False (Ubuntu ~ XP)
I suppose Ubuntu < Mac... True

You can take a look at OpenSUSE also if you prefer KDE interface (they work with KDE directly at a somewhat-commercial level). Both have Multimedia derivatives (Ubuntu -> Ubuntu Studio, OpenSUSE -> Jacklab).

A recent addition to the production scene is Kdenlive, a prosumer video-editing app. Can straight away grab DV and work with transitions, although compositing is best left to this other app Jahshaka which is sadly being redesigned at this point of time. If you're looking for something like Final Cut Pro then Cinelerra is the closest deal. For audio, there is the trusty Ardour aka "Pro Tools for Linux" (version 3 is coming with MIDI and currently VST support is mediocre although Guitar Rig runs well) but you can also run REAPER (and a few other commercial DAWs) with little overhead.
