Tube Screamer

just wondering, if one were to use, say, a Tubescreamer, for boosting an already dirty, hi-gain tube amp(think metal distortion), would the dynamics and bells n whistles of the said OD pedal go out the window, or would there still be a big difference?

would it be worth it to get the more expensive OD just for a clean boost on a dirty amp and not fully utilise the gain control?

1. the 'booster' pedal's dynamics depends on how much of its character is let through to the amp. having another higher drive pedal in the chain might prevent this from happening. if you choose to max out the primary distortion/ drive & still hope to hear some ear candy from the booster unit- it won't work...

having boosting/ cascading one drive into another for some time now, i find that boosting an amp's drive has a more dynamic effect as oppossed to boosting another pedal. my current tool for doing this is Rocktron's Austin Gold which gives me more of what i wanna hear (more Marshall from my Marshall he he...) without interfering with the default tone too much (very minimal interferance in fact...)

2. for clean boosts, i'd rather you use a non-drive type pedal eg: EHX LPB1

If you play deathmetal though tube screamer id say ure insane! tube screamer is a booster pedal to enhance the twang, chunkiness of your guitar especially strats, i think u bought wrong pedal, maybe not, try combine boss od with that tube screamer ulld love it, or combine it with bodd OD3 if u want to sound like yngwei :)

thanks for the reply shred and sub. I guess i'll stick to my OD pedals for the time being.

actually, i do play deathmetal, with a tubescreamer in front of my amp too, but my amp handles the distortion, not the pedal ;)

ditto. i don't find it rewarding to try & enhance an amp's lacklustre drive performance simply because, chances are, it would still be a pathetic result. when i play, this is the set up (not necessarily a Fender guitar...):

JCM800, as mid gain as it is, can be turned into a thrash metal monster with the help of a good OD pedal though. Thats considered gain boosting isnt it?

definitely. i'm with you there- it's about the amp offering the primary drive source, the external pedal enhancing it. there are too many people out there thinking that if they got hold of a killer booster type pedal, they're made for tone but external attachments working into an already driven amp is a secondary input.

at the moment im using an ibanez TS7 or MSL1 to clean boost my 5150, not to increase gain, but simply to tighten the tone. Good results so far, but would a boutique hi-end OD pedal or the famed 808 improve my tone a lot more?

For Clean Boosts wise, what I do is I use my BD-2 (modded by randolf) / Goosonique Boosty, I'm sure there are many good clean boosts out there but these are the few that are within the moderate pricing range and they deliver. Oh, the catalinbread chili picaso (not sure if the name is right) is quite good too. I opted for the BD-2 in the end cause it has a wide range of tonal usages.

As to ur question whether it is worth to get a more expensive OD just for the clean boost, it's really your call on what kind of price tag you would peg against the sound you want to hear.

Hmm, sorry another noob question abt the TS again.. So would it be recommended for me to use a TS-7 to boost my DS-2 for me to get a thicker chunkier sound?

Cause from previous posts, I'm lost as in whether the TS is only suitable for boosting a amp's overdrive or can it boost both an amp as well as a pedal.

Then would you guys recommend using the TS-7 as a booster for my DS-2 or the other way round...

Sorry for bombarding so many question, still finding out abt pedals... :)

regardless of the DS-2/ TS-7 arrangement, choose the set-up which you like to hear (doesn't matter which comes first).

for a boomy drive boost, you can consider this:

yes, the TS-7 can be used to push another overdrive & not exclusively for driven amps.
