just wondering, if one were to use, say, a Tubescreamer, for boosting an already dirty, hi-gain tube amp(think metal distortion), would the dynamics and bells n whistles of the said OD pedal go out the window, or would there still be a big difference?
would it be worth it to get the more expensive OD just for a clean boost on a dirty amp and not fully utilise the gain control?
1. the 'booster' pedal's dynamics depends on how much of its character is let through to the amp. having another higher drive pedal in the chain might prevent this from happening. if you choose to max out the primary distortion/ drive & still hope to hear some ear candy from the booster unit- it won't work...
having boosting/ cascading one drive into another for some time now, i find that boosting an amp's drive has a more dynamic effect as oppossed to boosting another pedal. my current tool for doing this is Rocktron's Austin Gold which gives me more of what i wanna hear (more Marshall from my Marshall he he...) without interfering with the default tone too much (very minimal interferance in fact...)
2. for clean boosts, i'd rather you use a non-drive type pedal eg: EHX LPB1
