well, i think its more down to dollars and cents for these companies. they tend to change to cheaper components made in china or such now. earlier boss pedals were made i japan with japan components, but now made in taiwan with who-knows-what components! if u can get ur hands on the older ds1 and A/B with the newer ones, they sound different.
abt the ts9 pedals, try to get the older version when they were still made by maxon. you can check them by looking under the battery clasps, they have 'maxon' on it. they sound different than the current one.
and i feel boutique pedals don't guarantee to give u good tone as it depends on the hands of the player. and that is why those super rich/famous/guitar gods just use the 'normal stuff'.
