Tube Amp's tubes

actually i read that u can just change power tubes in a fixed biased amp (esp. pro jr's) without rebiasing, it doesn't make much difference and won't harm the amp. just make sure the tubes are well matched.

yeah, i rem fixed biased needs to be rebaised, cuz last time my bassman was fixed biased.

Tubes to be matched, so that run equally hot

Preamp can be dif makes n brands n dif type of preamp tubes, eg 12ax7, 12au7...etc.

Power tubes better to use the same brand n rating. Altho some ppl mod their amps to mix power tubes... But not tried, so just stick to the safer options.

just fyi guys.. i replaced the stock 12ax7 tubes with EH 12ay7 tubes and the amp noise is now v. low.

Will replace the power tubes soon after I figure out how to rebiased the amp. : )

Rebiasing is not exactly that easy to learn to do, so if unsure, pls send it to the ppl who can do it.

EI preamp tubes r v nice as well, so r tungsols

i swaped my 12AX7 for a 12AT7 ... in V1 (clean channel)..
but i realised that althought there was added warmth, the harmonics were just "not there".

So i guess ...
it boils down to personal preferance again ...

it's good to ask for advice ...
but yet ... it just depends on the individual...
After all ... "IT IS YOUR SOUND"
:)

Great thread ...
as we kinda know what to expect, without having to spend on experimenting.
But ... in the end .....PErSONAL PERFERANCE ... is the main thing ~!
:D

thanks dude.. for the pro jr is not too difficult, just have to discharge the capacitors and unsolder/replace a resistor..

Any good article on this topic will be much appreciated.

Check the Guitar Sticky for tube/tube amp threads. Generally other than tone wise, most of the tube have ratings and exhibit different amounts of headroom and gain.

I'm using EH 12AX7 and 6L6, not as preference, but because they are default stuff in there. Don't see the point of swapping out for more tonal goodness. When they wear out I'll switch over the 6L6s with KT88s to try out the difference (supposedly it'll sound much more plexi).

>> the 'ROCK' comes from the power tube saturation ... preamp drive is just for bedroom wank.. imo!
Please don't buy the hype from the clowns who post everthing but the fact !!
Focus more on the power section and followed by the speaker + cabinet !

SED Winged SV6L6GC is what iam getting for my next replacement !!

Now bookmark this >>>> http://www.amptone.com/

u will like the sed c winged 6l6gc, i loved it much on my bassman!!! The effect over the sovteks was kind of like when u take ou rusty strings and change new strings on ur guitar. Like more lively, n having a blanket taken off ur amp.

Agreed that the speakers/cab combi is v impt. Didnt really see the pt before, tot as long as i got a gd amp head, can alr. Wah, until i tried my amp thru my frens cab n speakers... WORLD OF DIFFERENCE

But speakers r abit harder to get local, so u gotta buy the cabs available onli.

I got them for $80 if i rem correctly, someone ordered extra matched quart from the tubeshop. So i got it from him...

BTW, the sovtek i took out were not alr dead, its still v useable but the difference is too great to look back.

Personally i prefer the 6l6gc to els. Im curious to find out how the ac30 will like with the 6l6gc, if anyone even bothers to design one or try, then again it will be only with 1 power tube lol

Its a diff design which will not cater 6L6's !

Anyways... notable example is Jimi Hendrix. Jimi switch out the stock British made Mullard EL34's in his Marshall Plexi with American made Tung Sol 6550's. 6550's sound like 6L6's except much louder and they tend not to distort when pushed. Jimi did this to have his Marshall better fit the tone of his Fender Stratocaster.
