Channel NewsAsia - Tuesday, May 20 SINGAPORE : Residents in several areas in Singapore said they felt tremors at about 10.40pm on Monday.

The MediaCorp News hotline received calls from those staying in Lavender, Punggol and Teck Whye Lane.
The callers said the tremors lasted for about 10 seconds.
Some thought they were feeling giddy, while others felt the vibrations by observing how the keys on the wall shook or the movement of the water level in the fish tank.
The tremors could have been caused by an earthquake which hit Indonesia’s Sumatra island at that time. — CNA/ms

any softies affected?

Due to our geographical location, it's quite unlikely that Singapore would ever be hit whether it's a cyclone or tsunami.

But then again, you never know. No one can control these natural disasters. Like the recent cyclone that hit Myanmar, it usually hits India but this time it changed course and hit Myanmar instead.

Oh i felt the tremors. My place is considered pretty near to Lavender i think. About 4 bus stops away? Anyway, i was surfing SOFT when my computer monitor started to shake. Went to wash my face after that.

The accurate assessment is 2012, where we will all leave everything behind us and travel to other spheres, but before that, there are signs of the time. Disasters swallowing up innocent people, wars and then the final showdown will come. Many people pretend everythings fine, but inside them, they are trembling.

ridethetiger: Curious to know how you got that figure.

But yeah, I'm shaking on the inside. Who wouldn't after seeing the aftermath of both the cyclone in Myanmar and the earthquake in China. And now the earthquake in Sumatra.

Apparently my dad says there have a sharp increase in earthquakes in the region, ranging from 2ish-5ish on the Richter scale. Can't seem to find any news/statistics on that though.

Oh puh-leese, have some sense. Disasters happen all the time, people die all the time. The only reason why it appears so serious is because we've got a short memory. The 1556 Shanxi earthquake killed over 800,000 while the the 1970 Bhola cyclone killed over 500,000. What we have recently is peanuts.

And have you forgotten that WWII killed an estimated 40 to 72 million? These things appear huge because they're being reported. Sometimes you have to look where the ball isn't, instead of where the ball is. If you can do that for soccer, you can do that for disasters.

And no, ridethetiger, no no no. The end of the Mayan calender is supposed to be the end of a cycle, not the end of the world. Prophetic as it sounds, it's utter bullshi+.

I think you missed my point. Ball's in China and Myanmar, obviously.

Where is the ball not? Darfur. Zimbabwe. Pakistan. North Korea. Many more.

I'm sorry, I didnt take it seriously enough. So anyways, you're saying that rampant global disasters is nothing to get worried about? And that its not an indication of 'world-gone-wrong'?

He got that in some forum where they discussed about the end of the world in 2012. The mayan's prediction etc all falls on 2012. Personally its crap talk coz men are not god.

oh ya. i've watched the series on youtube abt the mayan calendar.
sheesh.
and i havent felt the tremors monday night.
where was i? hmm.

Does the tremors produce a rumbling sound when it happened? or just things shaking? I felt something like a rumbling of a truck but I swear it's not a truck coz it just doesn't sound like it came from a vehicle. Oh yeah.. like an f1 car's rumbling engine. for like a few seconds.

I work in a highrise and I do mean high rise tower in the city - it freakin sways man ....

excuse to get out for a cigge break though ... :D

Yes that's exactly what I'm saying. How is the world going wrong just because of NATURAL disasters? If you're gonna make an argument about soaring temperatures due to our carbon emissions, then of course, kudos to you for seeing a link between our actions and the consequences we suffer. Earthquakes and cyclones? They ain't nobody's fault, and they ain't no sign of armageddon or ragnarok or whatever religion's doomsday you believe in.
