Tremolo and Action

Hey guys.. just wondering.. if you're using a guitar with a vintage trem/ wilkinson copy (NOT FLOYD ROSE) on a guitar how far back would u allow it to whammy? Eg. enable a note to go 1/2 step up when "whammy-ed" back or what? If so wouldn't the action be relatively high since it would require a higher saddle height? What can be done about the action then? Issit possible to allow u to whammy back and yet have great action?

vintage trems are sometimes set to rest entirely on the guitar body, thus only allowing dive bombs. however, its possible to make it "float" as well. the trem on my strat is set to allow a stretch of one to two full notes. :D

the action can be reset after u've adjusted the bridge to an acceptable float. in the case of vintage trems, there are small allen-key adjustable screws on each saddle, so u can just drop the string height after that. its definately possible to have great action and whammy like crazy, much less just back

bro limitations of the vintage style bridge means u never gonna get a dive bomb monster without going horribly outta tune .... Sum ppl on the othr hand cant stand the feel of a floyd...so its really a trade off... next bestthing I gues is the fender floyd strats or the high end custom jobs with the locking std bridge & roller nuts?
