hi guys,

just wan to do a survey here. i personally use traditional grip. not because it looks cool, but because i've been using it for 3 years ever since i started playing drums. of course, no grip is better then the other.

one question for all people who uses traditional grip. is your fulcrum point 3-4 inches from the butt of the stick? because i have seen dave weckl, steve gadd playing traditional with their fulcrum point 1 inch from the butt of the stick. has anyone done that before?

my problem is that i can't archive loud sound without having a swinging motion, similar to the moeller technique when my fulcrum is 3-4 inches from the butt of the stick. but there is, of course, good amount of bounce.
but when i tried holding the fulcrum point 1inch from the butt of the stick, i have a loud sound, but sacrificed bounce as a result.

any trad player can help?

Hi Mix,

I use traditional grip and the fulcrum point of my left hand is abt 3-4 inches off the butt. When I need power, I'll moved it to abt an inch from the butt. But I very comfortable with the former position as it allows me to play more comfortably.

hi behop,

i could play singles relatively fast 3-4 inches from the butt of the stick. from wrist transit to fingers and stuff. but when i tried to play 1-2 inches from the butt of the stick, i can't do the transition as me fingers arn't strong enough, or they are not relaxed enough. my whole hand feels as if it is struggling even to hit it. because there is no bounce, i'll need to bring the stick back up with my wrist.

i have seen steve gadd and dave weckl, along with other drummers like steve smith, vinnie. they played relaxed, and they can even to do flamadiddles, rolls and stuff. juz amazes me.

anyway, do you feel the same as what i have shared?

cheers,
jack

hey hows it going, i tend to switch as well. i'm still kinda consued when playing brushes i duno wat grip to use haha i do certain things well with either one so... ....

okie, maybe i shld be abit more specific, when i'm playing stuff tht tends to be swung like when i'm doing a shuffle or jazz sprang a lang kinda thing, i wld use a trad grip. not all the time though i still use the match if i need volume out of my shuffle or when i'm trading 4s or doing a solo in a jazz piece.
trad just feels better on certain occasions, when u need to play stuff thts alittle mroe subtle and not crazy in ur face kind of rhythms like a funk groove for instance. ghost notes sound diff, the angle of ur stick is diff from match. it sounds more feathery if tht makes any sense.
for brushes i dunno i'm still figuring tht one out.

blurred are you playing anywhere?

for brushes it's actually not that much different, just that you want to push the brush down agaisnt the head in order to allow more contact between the two. hence the buzzing sound.

me not lah not playing anywhere, maybe at jam nites at crazies thts abt it. yah man u need to show me how u do it joshie

Hi Jack,

Sorry for the late reply, was very busy for the last few days.

After reading your post, i went to analysis my grip and I realised that I don't change the fulcrum point at all, even if I need a loud backbeat. I tend to remain it at abt 3 to 4" from the butt of the stick, simply that is the balance point of the stick. When I need to play a loud back backbeat or louder, I use more of a moeller technique to do so.

Hope it helps you.

Cheers....

Wha :D :D Moeller Technique har? ...MUST TEACH ME HAR .... When...When !

Can join WFD liao (when they come to Singapore) after learning Moeller Kekekekeke !...

Teach you Moeller? I don't think I can.... why not ask your sifu to teach you? I think he's in a much better position to teach you this method.

WFD? I don't give a damn to this title..... We are musicians, bro, not atheletes....
