I wonder how many people have heard of this:

Album: Age Of Impact
Track: Impact #2 - Fading Fast
By: Explorer's Club

This was a project group by Trent Gardner. What's worth buying about this album is mainly the solos all over the album which many are by none other than John Petrucci. This was when he was still with Ibanez, comparatively still less known, and freshly after A Change Of Seasons and Falling Into Infinity.

I specially mention track 2, mainly because he does all the solos on this track, and his signature tone is all over this. he RARELY plays like this on his DT albums (with the exception of Lines In The Sand from Falling Into Infinity), and is probably the most powerful solo I've ever heard. It's so simple a 5 year old could probably play it. But it's so damned effective. Try searching for this track. You won't regret it. It'll bring you to tears...

Up till today, these 3 solos never fail to bring a chill to my spine. THIS is tone!!!

The other one that just slays is also by John Petrucci, but done with Jordan Rudess in the live album "An Evening With" - In The Moment. This one kills man...

everyone here's a rocker it seems, why no jazz/country/bluesy/pop stuff?
I think a solo can only be as good as the entire song. Shreddy stuff are great but does it go along with the whole piece and not just arp arp arp lots of notes arp arp root with vibrato.
just from the top of my head...

Brad Paisley - Little Moments
Brian Setzer - Sleepwalk
Joe Satriani - Until We Say Goodbye
Brad Paisley - Munster Rag

plus one - Extreme - Get The Funk Out

SRV live, Micheal Landau improvs, Danny Gatton anywhere, Tommy Emmanuel anywhere...
