Top 5 Black Metal Bands

black metal is just a genre right? Only Some bands are associated to anti-christ/satanism right?

It is a genre no doubt and while it is true that some of the bands have satanic or paganist leanings, not all of them share similar ideology in their music.Unfortunately, its a huge misconception that the general public has, what more with the killings and the whole Mayhem legacy with the suicides and killings

Some black metal bands I like very much. Some of them have a lot of influences from other music but I like 'em that way.

Marduk (has a bit of grindcore and other influences)
Gorgoroth
Satyricon (even their recent stuff is cool)
Enslaved
Emperor
Acturus
Antestor
Impiety
Elgibbor
Crimson Moonlight
Sanctifica

Personally I don't really have consistent favourite bands, there're plenty of underground gems in black metal, the hard part is finding them. Funny thing is, other than Marduk, I like black metal that is slower, heavier and more raw. And also, a number of black metal bands I like are Christian bands.:mrgreen:

Emperor
Dimmu Borgir
Satyricon
Behemoth
Celtic Frost

I'm a fan of Celtic Frost too. Sadly, they have disbanded and Tom Warrior has already formed a new band called Triptykon.... Monotheist was a beautiful album. But we will never get to hear the Part II of the Requiem instrumental trilogy.

Check out Tom's blog too. He's a great writer, besides being a good musician.

Growls? More like shrieks... You get growls in death metal, not so often in black metal. I can do black metal vocals but not death metal vocals. Strange, huh! Considering that my voice is unusually low.

Black metal was originally created to be Satanist or anti-Christ, but over the years there're a lot of new developments. Plenty of bands out there aren't one bit Satanic or anti-Christ. Guess the genre's initial purpose somehow changed over the years.

Some bands change, too. Marduk used to be all anti-Christ and everything, now they're singing more about war. But of course they probably still hold their anti-Christ beliefs. But from my point of view, more of them are anti-Christ than they are Satanists.

After all, Christianity was forced on them a long time ago, those who resisted were probably ill-treated, so probably its more like a hatred for Christianity than genuine Satanic worship. But of course, there are also true Satanists.

lol ok for the sake of gorgor, i like marduk too. :P

eh but really, if you should suggest like the best marduk album, which would it be? like I know how sometimes you cant rate metal, but like if all you had is one of their album to grab someone's attention, which would it be? I listen to them, just havent gotten their cds. spent close to like a thousand this year on cds i think. next year shall be more!

I haven't quite heard all their albums, since they're really difficult to obtain in Singapore. I did own Plague Angel, though. It got bashed by folks who don't think its true black metal, but it was a very enjoyable extreme metal album. One of the best I ever owned. Particularly "Throne of rats" and "Warshaw".
