Hi pple

Im 27 and I just wanna find out if im too late to learn keyboard? I just wanna play some music but is there any ways not to learn notes? Also what do you call those music make from orchestra samples? Thanks

hey.. it is never too late to learn anything. there are no boundaries in learning.. as long as u want to learn, u can.. =) just go ahead and learn..

not to learn notes? means learn to play in chords?

Never too late to start. Just probably need more time to learn. Anyway, the fun is worth it!

You mean you don't wanna learn to read music notations? Can.....just learn some accompaniment styles (no melody, coz suppose to play as people sing), play by ear (with melody) or play by memory (with melody).

However, music is a language. Reading and writing music notations would help you a lot, as quite a lot of music materials are in music notations. That's how musicians communicate musical ideas if they don't play it out.

In Barbara English Maris' book titled "Making Music at the Piano: Learning Strategies for Adult Students", the author mentioned that adults learn better visually. And much repetition is necessary. As we all know, memory is lacking as people grow older. So, it would make things a lot easier for yourself really to learn to read music notations to aid you in your learning.

Not sure what you mean by making music with orchestra samples. Do you mean to do sequencing? Like playing all the different instrument sounds and putting them together to a song?

oh yes, it's never too late to learn anything.

I'm learning to play guitar again after stopping almost 10 years

Great! yeah its sequencing. What is the different between learning pop piano and classical piano? I dun really get it classical are more hardcore?

If I have to really learn the notation then no choice i will give a try. :)
How easy is it to learn to play piano just by listening from to others who is playing?

Im still thinking on what kinda keyboard i should get also. I was looking into M-Audio prokey88 or maybe others. budget is ard 1k-2k or more depends on which I like. I used to have a friend who is doing sequencing and he prefer yamaha clavinova. Im not sure how to classify those instruments for my needs. any to recommend?

First thing first, read this thread http://soft.com.sg/forum/how-keyboard/41533-classical-pop-piano.html and decide what you want to learn first.

Second, if you decide on classical...read this http://soft.com.sg/forum/484733-post7.html

Third, if you decide on pop....read http://soft.com.sg/forum/gear-keyboard/2708-recommendations-keyboard-synthesizer.html

Fourth, read Musical Notation and Sight Reading: important or not? - SOFT = Music In Singapore to reinforce the idea of learning to read music notation

Fifth, read Perfect Pitch (vs relative pitch) - SOFT = Music In Singapore and Chords for Way Back Into Love - SOFT = Music In Singapore to learn about playing by ear.

Lastly, you should know what you need to do first to learn sequencing. =)

Yes, use the search functions.

Have fun!

Please lah piano_ex......you and the other people provided the material in those threads.

I remembered my keyboard class. There were ladies in their late 30s and 40s as well. One was a sunday school teacher. She used the songs that she learnt since Day 1 at the beginner class to the last one in advanced to put together a musical, so that the children can participate in it for Christmas in church.

Another lady used the chords and skills taught to her since Day 1 to compose a song to tell people about Jesus. She worked hard at the song through to advance class (about a year later) and finally presented it to the class.

Both ladies start from 0 background. I am deeply encouraged by their perserverance!!

Hi mystic, it's never to late to learn anything. But don't be too early to give up if things don't go as expected. To begin with, having the right keyboard that inspires helps. Enjoy your journey! :)

Heh
Thanks for the encouragement. I will be taking it after my exam. need to clear all those first.
Right now maybe I will stick to my Sis's traditional piano. Will save some $$ to get M3 by end of this yr or when is the good time to buy? eventually wanna learn sequencing. hopefully can make it. ~_~

hey mystic, hi5. im also 27 gg on 28, and started picking up pop piano for the first time in my life this year... you're not alone :)

i mostly play electric bass, and to be upfront about it my main intention of taking up keys is to appreciate the keyboard from a band perspective... and to be able to see what the keyboardists are playing when we have to play songs on the spot in church :p

thanks to all for gathering the useful links in one place! coincidentally, our band just played way back into love yesterday, and im wondering about the whole play by ear thing... so its really a godsend!

i'd agree it's never too late to learn, but i do see the difficulties surfacing. i'm 18 going on 19, been a guitarist the past few years of my life and just recently began trying to self-learn playing the piano using my sisters' basic scores from way back when. my main problem is acquiring sufficient dexterity, so i suppose the only way is to put in more practice and work on those technical exercises.

ruxist, i'm the opposite of u. i play piano while i was young........ now only learn how to play guitar. n i'm 20 goin to 21. Ur not alone........ it's just hard work and of coz plenty of love.........

Thomas Edison once said : " genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration"

honestly to me there no such thing as "too late to learn", as long as you learn with an open mind, anything is possible.
