Hi guys i'll be going down to HK this june and i was planning to drop by their "SweeLee" equivalent, TomLee. I'm curious if anyone's been there before and if so, are the cymbals cheaper? or any music equipment for that matter.

bro, i just came back from HK and went to Tom Lee and see. But i cant comment on drums related equipment because i only look at guitars and amps. As for the price, their fender are almost the same like what you see on musicianfriend when you convert to SGD, as for their gibsons, their price is cheaper than Singapore SL but still more expensive then musicianfriend. The other thing is some of their guitar are quite poorly maintained so when you test it, the overall experience might not be so nice. Lastly, their prices tend to differ a little from branch to branch. If you have time, you should go to a few before u buy, and some smaller branches will have "B grade stock" for you to purchase at a much lower price.

Hope this helps....

I was there last christmas... As far as cymbals goes, they have a wide selection of zildjian cymbals... Not sure what other cymbals they carry, cos i didn't really look... They have quite a large collection of snare drums... Tama, Pearl, DW, Global... When i was there they had all the warlord snares from tama...

I bought a Reference Sanre (14x6) there for only SGD570... This is way cheaper than what swee lee quote me 900 bucks!!!

If you are looking for pedals, its cheap also... Bought a Pearl Eliminator Twin pedal for SGD340... Iron Cobra also cost around the same price...

I went there during christmas, so there was a sale going on... Not sure if you go now can get those things at the same price now... Anyway enjoy your trip there!!! I'm sure you will like it there in tom lee... Oh and when you are there, look for ken to serve you... He is friendly and has good knowledge of drum products...

Hey guys,

Been there 2x already.

1) Go to the one @ Cameron Lane. Tts the biggest.
2) Zildjians are about 20% cheaper
3) Paistes are about 25% cheaper
4) More variety of stuff there, including sticks, stickbags..etc..
5) Cheaper snares there as well, DW Collecters, Gretcsh, Sonar...etc

Get ready to spend some $$.

If its not too much to ask, can i trouble you to help me buy 4 pairs of sticks there?

Ill PM you. thanks,

rla.

Thanks for the info, rla!

Twistejoker: Can I trouble you to help me buy a pair of Zildjian Dark hats,a 20" K Custom Dark ride and a DW Acoustic EQ Snare, please? Heh heh kiddin'.

But please do up a review for the store for us drummers! Pictures of the drum section and your acquisition(s) would be lovely as well!

Tom Lee's the first place I visit whenever I'm in HK! I love their wide selection! And quite a lot of accessories too! I bought a hard-to-find cowbell beater that mounts on a bass drum pedal. They've got a wide range of stands, bags, bass drum pedals...

And their selection of other instruments is also great. So I try not to tell my musician friends that I'm heading to HK, otherwise I also end up paying a lot in excess baggage! Sekali got to bring back tube amp and all!! LOL!

Nike : Haha wow geez that's a pretty bad misread!

beboptang: Whoa. Okay, haha any recommendations?

Peace.

Recommendations? Hmmm... I don't usually buy really big items (like whole drumsets or amps), unless I wanna get hassled with shipping it over. I stick with things I can either put on the plane as odd-sized baggage, or things I can hand-carry.

If you are buying cymbals bigger than 16", either bring an empty cymbal safe -- the hard-case type -- or buy it at Tom Lee. Don't bring a soft cymbal case, because you will definitely have to check-in the cymbals. Normal carton boxes aren't that great protection either, because the flat side can still get crushed in carriage. No matter how many "FRAGILE" stickers you paste on your package, the luggage handlers still throw them around.

Buy travel insurance! A lot of insurance companies have single trip plans. That way, if your purchases get lost, you can get some money back.

Best to purchase with a credit card or VISA/Master debit card. But may be wise to set a ceiling on what you wanna spend on this visit. Remember to include excess baggage costs if your luggage exceeds the maximum set by the airline. Cost and max weight info can be found on airline websites.

Do your research to see if the prices on other online sites (like Musician's Friend) are cheaper, ie inclusive of shipping. Sometimes I just buy while I'm there, even if it costs more, cuz I'll have it immediately.

I do a lot less planning when I buy music stuff from Tom Lee, cuz HK is a lot more accessible. Sometimes I go into Tom Lee for a long time and walk out of there with some lugs! Sometimes empty-handed. I do a lot more purposed shopping, research and planning if I go to the US or to Istanbul.

Just some thoughts, hope they're helpful...

Peace,
Beboptang

Hmmm, that's great. I don't plan on getting anything too big, so i HOPE there won't be any issues with shipping and all. Thanks for the info. By the way, happened to see any Wuhan China's there?
