Well Brother.. first of all well said, secondly badly said.

I do agree with you where are the originals as said? But 1st of all do you accept all kinds of genre and then critics one's original composition?

If you are open to new things, thats fine, but if you are not better dont.

Why covers? I believe you have missed out the very first news that was spread for this gig..."most of the bands are new to the scene"... For bands like this its acceptional. And guess wat I'm too with one of the band. Even Metallica do covers, but hey their breed of music is well accepted with all genre, but they breed their music in Bay Area. Do we have one here? NO!! Dream Theater do covers too..The only so called influential place for all music too bree was the now defunct The Substation.. Hey I was there and and boy was the scene tremendous. I too grow up with local music back then, but the guys in the scene were united, not like what I'm seeing nowadays. Those bands do, do covers too. Bands I'm mentioning about are eg;

1. Opposition Party who is now in the States [ Opposition Party Media ]
2. Silent Sorrow
3. Stompin Ground
4. Voiceout

and many more..

You see as a unit [band], sometimes cover songs do play apart. Its basically the basic genre of what your influence are. If one is a pro in the industry and pull off originals in their first gig, that's impressive, but how many bands can do that? Even Stomping Ground took almost a decade to produce the very first album.. Measured by another Ritcher Scale. Not to mention Ossuary, whose very 1st debut album still selling till now from 1998.

So, the objective of my topic is, do give chance to our new breeds to the scene. No matter what they do to play, we should give them the respect that they have the guts to practice, and put in effort just to appear in a gig. Especially the sacrifices they made { Do you know that some guys are married with kids, I am, 3 indeed }

I believe everybody deserves it.

Agent Orange

I have to agree with you to a point that it might be a first step for these bands to push on and tighten with the useful aid of covers.

I might have been blunt and unthoughtful in my previous post.

But shouldn't we all encourage the freedom and creativity for these "young and new" bands to write originals too?

From my own experience, most new bands might start up with a whole load of covers, and then when they turn to songwriting, the songs actually do sound like a rip off rather than originality or showing an influence of the covers.

I was just hoping that the newer bands would be encouraged or attempt to produce original material, it would be fresh be it their first gig or so.
I am not totally against covers. Maybe in a set list of 5-6 songs. 1-2 covers would be cool if there are 3-4 originals as well!

Would you rather see a new band produce 5 originals or 5 covers?

This is just my opinion, but i believe a cover should be done in a band's original way. Not a 100% copy. Maybe make it more brutal? somethin like that. most important make it your own style...

Panzer,

i agree with u.. Covers, do ur style.. be urself.. Band needs it own identity.. and the scene needs to be opened.. not just narrow down to one style.. Metal is very wide.. very..
