Thomastik Infield Strings

i hate my current set of DR black beauties. but i can understand why people would like them. it's a personal preference thing

anyway i have always told myself that i must try TI's, because there are so many discussions where people either rave about them, or bash others for not liking them

i want to know from anyone who has used them what they think of the low string tension. the jazz flats are E .100 and the rounds are even lighter at .089

apparently talkbass guys had some issues with the gauge, and some of them actually used shorter 32" scale strings on their long scale basses to compensate for the lack of string tension. but quite frankly, TBers are quite extreme in both their views and their appetite for experimentation

i'm not really a flats person but the reviews on the ti jazz flats seems mythical. and many claim that they don't sound like normal flats. at the same time nothing much is said about the rounds.

anyone has any experience with them? bass strings are not cheap, and having to swap a set you don't like doesnt make them any cheaper

i have a set of powerbass and used to have a set of flats.

i highly recommend the powerbass if you slap, but if u prefer the old school tone, then go for the flats.

flats don't need to be renewed. for powerbass, just renew them by dipping them inside methylated spirit. my set has been on for 3 yrs already.

I'm obviously biased, but I love the lightness and responsiveness of the Jazz rounds. They also add a really nice low-mid growl to the tone :)

You're always welcome to swing by my place to try them if you're interested!

yeah. best way is to try it first, even on another bass to get an idea of what its like. Using TI flat now on a fretless and i must say its really comfortable. I normally use hi beams 45-105 gauge, but the lower gauge on the flats doesnt bother me one bit.

i've had the jazz flats... if you're into that smoothen fingerstyle, really gd stuff.. well, the tension thingy i had mine on `57 precision, it was quite alright.. slightly lower tension, u don't have to really play hard, so if you're into blues, jazz, quick funk lines, to me it actually ease ur playing.
not forgetting the extremely smooth finish..

for slap i've the superalloys.. to me, same as DR nickel.. bright snappy marcus miller sound..
great for finger stuff too.. :)

but quality, jazz flats are really unique in finish and touch(tension)..

cherns i'm interested to change to the jazz rounds, but i rem u said it wasn't really gd for slap?

I use TI flats on one of my basses ... I liked the tone, even if the feel takes a bit getting used to ... somewhat rubbery compared to, say, flats from EB or D'Addario, both of which I've used.

where do you buy D'Adarrio flats BTW? I've been looking and cant' find them.

And I also dont' want to be embarassed when I ask about flatwounds in our local shops just to get a funny stare by the ignorant salespeople... :(

i bought a set of chromes a long time ago from swee lee, i can't even remember which branch. but that was a couple of years back. it was below 30 bucks. back then i used a bass with a 2+2 headstock, and the string lengths of the D and G won't fit my fender

but swee lee has a couple of years' worth of stock, so don't expect anything new for the next couple of years :P

i ever had a jam studio owner look at the neck relief of that bass and he kept saying "WHY YOU USE THIS STRING?? NO GOOD..."
