hi guys,

i've just begun learning the guitar myself. i have very thin fingers, especially my left index finger. it has very little flesh at the tip, as such i find it very hard to fret properly. any tips?

welcome aboard 8-)

phew- you're referring to your fingertips, yes? thought you really had an issue with how thin your fingers are...

anyway, as you play on, the fingertips would generate thicker skin to adapt to your constant playing- no worries.

people like Django Reinhardt (RIP) & Tony Iommi had issues with their fingers/ fingertips but they adapted & became superb players to date (Django's left hand- 4th & 5th fingers permanently curled towards his palm due to severe shrinking of his tendons/ Tony Iommi had his fretting hand's fingertips severed in an industrial accident but Black Sabbath lives!!).

Man..that's like..an advantage. You're not really talking about thin, but soft. Thin fingers - you can do all sorts of acrobatics on the frets. Soft fingers is not a limitation. We all feel pain the first time, you're not alone.

It'll take time. Like Subversion says, the more you play, the harder your fingertips will be. I've been playing for 6-7 years and I've got quite small fingertips too, but I'd say my main disadvantage would be my relatively small hands.

So yeah, keep at it and things will get better over time.
