Wow!! IA hardcore fan, eh? Wanna to stun ppl with your harmonics ah? I remember sending 2 IA guitar clinic vids to my Thai guitarist fren, he had to take the trouble of d/loading and installing Realplayer to watch them... He was floored by IA's guitar ("Harmonics virtually anywhere & stronger than Vai's harmonics"). He thought that it was the bridge pup, but I think it's the overall guitar construction. The 24.75" scale and 27 frets are definitely crucial in that.

Darn... I think mine would be a Caparison Angelus (PRS copy)... haha

I suspect its the neck pup he has. The neck pup is actually in the middle position due to the 27 frets there... and the neck pup was apprently made to sound like a neck pup, since at that position, you get a kind of mix bridge/neck tone.

And of course, its his hammer on harmonics approach that is TOTALLY WACKED. :) Amazing axe for an amazing player!

I thought you would usually use the bridge pup for harmonics?

Hmm, I think the no. of frets would only affect harmonics from the neck pup only...

Here's the description of the Apple Horn's bridge pup, made by Caparison themselves:

"high power well balanced from high range to low, fulfilled with harmonics for both pick up ring mount and direct mount, in direct mount emphasized lower range."

Don't forget that Caparison has made IA quite a number of guitars...
"the nice guys and gals of Caparison have made me a number of great variations. Each different in wood, design and pick-ups."

haha, lucky idiot.

The position of the pickup perhaps, but how many frets the guitar has should not have any effect at all. And I feel this direct mounting of pickups having an effect on tone a big pile of marketing spin.

Pickups are magnetic/electronic devices, whether u mount it via springs or vintage style tubing or directly onto the body shouldn't have an effect on how it sense the strings. If any thing, direct mounting gives u touch less flexibility in how high/low u can sit the pickup into it's cavity.

Hows your fanned fret system? Is it easy to play without looking after a while?

Definately, muscle memory kicks in. If anything, it makes it alot more comfortable playing in lower positions. But tapping can get a whole lot trickier, esp since I got more strings and virtually no position markers :smt003

Yeah i was figuring that the tapping bit is tricky. Been thinking for years now, about getting a Dingwall Afterburner one bass. Any comments? Or alternatives? Thanks.

Dingwalls are probably the best bet at this point. I would think they were come better built and more pleasing to the eye (heh heh) than Novaks. Have u heard the samples on basstasters.com of the Dingwalls? Sounds like the tension on the low strings are very very high.

oh, I forgot about the hammer-on harmonics (cause I was thinking of processing sales and purchasing orders)! Imagine the tonal possibilities the Apple Horn can offer with 27 frets! Artificial harmonics (including tapping and hammer-ons) will be so unusual! We will never know how the Apple Horn truly works... I am beginning to think that you're right, ShredCow.

No man... Al uses the NECK pup for harmonics. unless my ears fail me. Its a distinct neck tone when he uses the harmonics and the notes he plays after the harmonics are definately neck pup sounding.

He's neck pup has a very unique tone... its like the middle single coil of a HSS/HSH guitar but very very round and fat... think Dimarzio Air Norton but with lots of treble.

Yeah Jumbo... Al's a master of harmonics. Ever heard Smoke on the Water played with harmonics? Hilarious!

There's actually TWO 27 fret guitars on my GAS list. One is a tagima K1 guitar. Thats the signature guitar of Kiko Lourieno (sp) of Brazlian epic/power metal band Angra... he is an AMAZING player and Angra has some of the most beautiful guitar work ever on a power metal album. And yeah, he is a master of 2 handed tapping... as in chords, bass line and melody, all in one.

Then the other is the Apple Horn.

The K1 is around SGD1800 and the Apple Horn is around SGD3300, both without shipping.

Ah... So desu ne...

I think you should wait for the opportunity to own the Caparison... I believe that one day, value-for-money, unique and Jap guitars will rule S'pore! (haha Japs failed back in the 40s... LOL!)

Yes, I heard Smoke on the Water... Available at favorednations.com... Very Euro-dance influenced, but I like it! I listen to La Bamba, SOTW, The Road Less Travelled and Print This! everyday. And sometimes, IA's guest solo (many years ago) on Road Ratt's song "Use the Lighter". haha

Mine would be Paul Reed Smith Custom 22. green in colour. same found in the website.

http://www.prsguitars.com/showcase/... have a fixed bridge rather than a tremolo.
