I don't think there was ever any doubt that tastes in music, art, cinema and literature reflect on a person's intelligence. I'd venture that it's also indicative of one's character, emotional and mental disposition and capacity for learning, exploring and understanding the world and one's place in it.
However, it's certainly not the be all and end all, nor an accurate measure - popularity levels and media proliferation of an artist also weigh heavily, as well as access and availability of an artist at any point of time. Also, I believe that one's formative years are what most shapes a person's musical tastes and developments for the years to come.
In other words, a 55 year old physics professor's taste are likely to veer towards the more well known artists of his youth - he'd probably pick The Eagles over Sufjan Stevens, even if he has had an opportunity to have heard Sufjan Stevens (which is arguably the more cerebral and musically creative artist) - purely because his tastes have already crystallised.
There are so many other intangible factors that influence tastes that even a controlled experiment could never conclusively determine (not by any ethical standards of course) - but in any case just take this in the spirit it was intended, ie a good fun read!
