Road to South Africa: Lions too good for Kuwait

International Friendly
KUWAIT 0 SINGAPORE 2
Al-Ansar Sultan Qaboos International Stadium
Muscat, Oman
Singapore has scored a convincing 2-0 win over Kuwait in a friendly played on Thursday evening at the Al-Ansar Sultan Qaboos Stadium in Muscat, Oman.

It was the first match for the Lions on tour ahead of a vital World Cup match in Riyadh against Saudi Arabia on 6th February.

After a closely-fought first half where Kuwait appeared to have a very slight edge by the time things drew to a close, Singapore turned up the heat when play resumed and went on to win with conviction.

Lionel Lewis in the Lions’ goal was kept busy, especially in the first half, making a number of fine saves in the opening 45 minutes and then twice denying the Kuwaiti attack with near-post saves at key moments in the second half.

The Singapore midfield was dominant for long periods with John Wilkinson, in particular, on song.

Mustafic Fahrudin provided the necessary muscle in the middle in support of first Shi Jiayi, on the flank and then in the second half substitute Ridhuan Muhamad, who caused massive problems for Kuwait with his pace down the right.

It was the introduction of Ridhuan and Khairul Amri at half time for first half skipper Indra Sahdan and left flanker Fazrul Nawaz that turned the tide the Lions’ way.

Astute Singapore coach, Radojko Avramovic, elected for speed out wide and he got that in abundance from Ridhuan and to a lesser extent from Amri.

Amri stole the ball from a defender before skewing a shot wide in the 57th minute and with their tails up the Lions began to take charge.

Wilkinson struck powerfully from 25 yards out at the hour mark and the Kuwaiti keeper Nawaf El Khaldi made a brilliant save to tip the shot over the bar.

The corner on the left from Jiayi fooled everyone grouped at the near post as the ball landed perfectly for Fahrudin to head home after making a great run into the six yard box.

After Lionel had made another superb save in the 67th the Singapore attack continued to prosper.

Shahril Ishak, another substitute, smashed a shot just wide in the 71st but S.League top scorer, Aleksandar Duric, sealed the win for his new country with a goal worthy of the big man.

A ball was hoisted forward by Noh Rahman, then touched on by Ridhuan for Duric who had two defenders to shake off.

Duric was being held back but somehow shrugged his challengers off, turning sharply inside the six yard box, to slam the ball home, as Ridhuan waited in support.

Khairul Amri had a goal disallowed for offside with ten minutes to go and second half captain Lionel was called upon once more to make a big save from a volley from Naher El Shimry.

Fahrudin and Duric were a happy pair after the game and the room mates would certainly have a lot to discuss later on.

“It was a good ball played to me,” said Duric. “I am certain that I was falling as I hit the shot and if I had not scored I would have earned a penalty.”

The goal was the third in as many games by the big striker. Fahrudin knew exactly how many he had scored before this match.

“One!” he volunteered. “It was good to score my second for the country tonight and it was about time I got another one.”

An incident deep into stoppage time, with Kuwait chasing the game, cost Singapore a two-game suspension for exciting midfielder Ridhuan Muhamad, who it appears was not the perpetrator and was unfairly sent off.

A melee, following the awarding of a free kick to Singapore, saw most of the players on the pitch weighing in and after the referee broke up the scuffle he singled out Ridhuan, who did not appear to be an offender.

Tempers were obviously frayed among the Kuwaiti players and the referee appeared to make a decision that a send off would calm things down, even though it was the Lions who had won the free kick.

FT from Muscat, Oman

Oman 2 Singapore 0

Oh man! :(

Match report below taken from KallangRoar.com

In the space of two minutes Singapore found themselves two goals down to Oman in Sunday night’s friendly international in Muscat a deficit the Lions were unable to claw back.

After the sound 2-0 win over Kuwait three days earlier the 2-0 loss has given Lions’ coach Radojko Avramovic and his team plenty to think about before they meet Jordan on Thursday in a third friendly and Saudi Arabia in a World Cup qualifier on 6 February in Riyadh.

Singapore appeared to be doing most of the attacking for the first seven minutes but a run through the heart of the Lions’ defence by Emad Alhosni turned the game on its head.

Alhosni capitalised on some hesitation from Singapore defender Baihakki Khaizan before slamming a shot past the helpless Lionel Lewis.

Two minutes later the same player proved too slippery once more, this time on the right and Baihakki brought him down clumsily inside the penalty area.

Qatari referee Abdul Rahman Abood awarded the penalty instantly.

Hussain Mudhafar planted his shot firmly past the keeper for a 2-0 lead inside nine minutes.

After these early setbacks Singapore did well to play their way back into the match but the goals would not come.

Khairul Amri was unfortunate not to earn a penalty in the second half, when sent tumbling inside the area, but the referee waved play on, much to the disgust of the Lions’ players.

Amri had run onto a smart through pass from captain Indra Sahdan and seemed certain to score until brought down.

Amri also had a powerful shot saved brilliantly by the Omani keeper and then had a goal disallowed for offside, a decision that stunned the Lions’ team.

After the game an angry Avramovic slammed the referee and his young defender, in equal measure.

“This Oman team has been together now for six or seven years,” he said.

“They all play in Qatar and the referee is from there too. There was nothing wrong with Amri’s goal and it was not offside,” he declared.

“Also that was a clear-cut penalty we were denied tonight.”

It was perhaps significant that the Omani crowd hailed the referee after the game, cheering him off the field.

Leaving aside the doubts on some of his decisions, Singapore met a very tricky opponent on Sunday night.

Oman was a very lively presence on the field and demonstrated a good understanding as a unit with some quality passing movements.

The Singapore team fought hard after the early setback and could easily have overcome the deficit with more leeway from the referee.

But Oman’s Alhosni was on fire and so was the rest of their team.

Captain Mohd Rabea, solid at the back, showed he was no slouch when overtaking the speedy Khairul Amri to dispossess the Singapore striker who had made a strong counter attacking move late in the game.

Avramovic was very displeased with the way his team defended early on.

“We had Juma’at Jantan and Ismail Yunos coming on and they did well enough. Maybe we will give these youngsters a chance in the next games too.

“Baihakki was at fault for both goals and I demand better,” said the coach.

Having roasted his player Avramovic said the Oman team was at least restricted to only two goals this time.

“Last time we were here we lost 7-0 so I should be happy it was only 2-0 this time,” he quipped.

“We should have known this would happen here (with a referee from a neighbouring country),” he reflected.

“When we go to Saudi Arabia I will be hoping for a referee from Japan, Korea or Australia.

“We will have a much better chance if that happens.”

It was obviously a far better outcome for Oman’s new coach, Julio Cesar Ribas, in his first match with his new team after joining them only earlier this month.

fgl: Ref was biased towards us n becos he came from Qatar, he favoured the Oman team. Oh man! I think we got screwed. But I think we could have avoided conceding the 2 goals. Oh well..Jordan is next n this time, I hope we get a neutral ref.

FT: Jordan 2 Singapore 1

Mustafic Fahrudin scored the penalty for us (76th min). We conceded the winning goal deep in injury time...unlucky..lets hope the Lions will go all out to attack Saudi Arabia next, it won`t be easy especially in their home ground.

Last minute sucker punch floors Lions

Singapore conceded a goal in the fourth minute of injury time to go down 2-1 to Jordan in an international friendly this evening at the Prince Mohammed International Stadium in Al-Zarqa City.

Mustafic Fahrudin's 76th minute penalty looked to have clinch a very credible draw against the hosts but for a defensive lapse right at the death.

Our Lions had started the match brightly with coach Raddy making four changes to the first eleven who started the previous friendly against Oman. Noh Rahman, John Wilkinson and Fazrul Nawaz returned to the lineup while Sevki Shaban made his full debut in the centre of defence in place of Precious Emeujeraye.

Aleksandar Duric came close to giving us the lead after he glanced his headed just wide after a good cross from Mustafic on the right. Duric would have another opportunity 15 minutes later but his header from inside the box was tame and straight at the keeper.

Jordan then drew first blood just after the half hour when Waseem Al Bzour evaded his marker at the far post for a simple tap-in following a corner from the right.

Our Lions took a while to reassert ourselves following that and were somewhat grateful to hear the half time whistle.

With both sides agreeing to unlimited substitutions each, we made five changes at the break with Raddy looking to give more of the squad members a run-out.

Chances were few and far between but our persistence paid off with a quarter of an hour left when substitute Khairul Amri retrieved the ball following a corner and drove into the box only to be scythed down. The referee pointed to the spot and Mustafic duly sent the keeper the wrong way to restore parity.

A draw looked to be a fair result between two sides with one eye on next Wednesday's opening World Cup Qualifiers but right at the very end, substitute Awad Raghed pounced on some hesitant defending to seal a 2-1 win for the hosts.

Singapore: Lionel Lewis (gk) (Hassan Sunny 74'), Noh Rahman (Faizal Hamid 46'), Baihakki Khaizan (Ismail Yunos 62'), Sevki Sha'ban (Precious Emeujeraye 46'), Daniel Bennett (Juma'at Jantan 88'), Ridhuan Muhammad (Khairul Amri 62'), Mustafic Fahrudin (Hariss Harun 90'), John Wilkinson (Isa Halim 46'), Fazrul Nawaz (Shi Jia Yi 46'), Indra Sahdan (captain) (Shahril Ishak 46') and Aleksandar Duric (Agu Casmir 77')
