Like everybody esle, i went to check out the 'new and refurbished' ronin. Even thou there are speculation of a new vocals, i went in expecting only the 4 of them.
The reason being that i had heard them in their last set (the dunlopillo thing) , where Derryn sang. Then i found bang's sercet-but-not-so-sercet myspace a/c where he sang too. Both have pretty good vocals, althou admittedly not so polished.
THE VOCALS
Fast foward to this particular gig, ronin almost sacastically and defiantly proved that having no lead vocals is not a big deal at all (with all respect to levan wee). In fact they know they are good at singing, all of them, thats y at the second last song, they all had a part in singing it.
Bang had a very 'song' look on his face when he hammer the drums while singing his song. I think we all know why. Kudos to bang cause we all know drumming and singing simultanously is hard to achieve it WELL.
THE MUSIC
And its not just the vocals part which im impressed with. But their music itself!
You have to be there to witness the genre change they are making. Its inspirational.
Its amazing how much difference a band can make when they are committed to the same genre without any disagreement. you can see the passion in their eyes (no, im not exaggerating.) while doing the kind of thing they have always wanted.
They have done well to stay true to their roots, those who had been there yesterday, im sure all of you are as stunned as me. The moment i heard the first song, i was speechless.
This is not ronin. This is bigger than ronin. Althou they are still ronin, you know what i mean.
CONCLUSION
If the quality i saw yesterday night is alrdy there from the start, meaning the debut album. The band will truly be written into the folklores of singapore.
Right now im glad they got everything sorted out and you can really see more passion in it now.
The final words? Im waiting for their sophomore effort. After yesterday, im expecting greatness from them.
