The New Paper's MAYHEM article (2/1/06)...

Not a fan of Mayhem or any of those black metal bands but I just find it ironic and absurd how the medias were woo-ing and wow-ing over Slipknot just becuz they're a "bigger" international act but when it comes to slightly more obscure bands, they would wanna kick a big fuss over the issue. Plus what's so bad about the lyrics of Mayhem... the lyrics of Slipknot's don't seem much lovey dovey either.

The New Paper... Singapore tabloid at its best!

look, this is what somebody replied frm the blabbermouth.net forum....

"Any band SHOULD be alowed to play in Singapore, but will they is the question. If a music group is that powerful to disrupt your society and turn your cities in to total chaos and anarchy, then that says something about your society not the bands!"

i totally agree with him. just one 5 men band could corrupt singapore's society?? yaaa rightt.. too sensitive.

i hope, the journalist somehow could read all of our postings here and put it in the newspapers for all to read. :D

If I can still remember, the article on DARK FUNERAL gig was AFTER the gig been played. It means the DARK FUNERAL guys are already outta Singapore.

Does anyone knows what do MDA question when organisers/ booking agencies are applying for permits for overseas bands? Like do they ask what sorts of performance are they going to do, what are their past musical records/ achievements etc?

No, said Mr Mohd Khalid, a reader, who tipped off The Electric New Paper about the planned gig.
Nxt time itz bttr u dont go hoohaa. Things are "underground" for a reason.
Singapore, whether they are 1st world or elite world country, are still Asian and every Asian countries (except Japan) still have that conservative culture thinking.

i think the government didn't know about the Dark Funeral gig. It was held secretly if i'm not wrong.
then i suggest mayhem n all such bands avoid the government too. hopefully avoid any nosy kiasu.

remember, Lee hsien loong, in more than one of his official speeches , has repeatedly emphasised on the nature of singapore society. its conservative.

should we self-censor ourselves even before anything is done then? would this be a better approach?

When will we become more liberal then?

even if the rest of the population, do not participate in the consumption of the entertainment that maniac provides, they may be offended and turned off by the mere notion of the presence of such a band.

i agree with that point. however, i'm curious. a small number of us here at soft listen to metal, hard rock, stuff that the average person out there doesnt listen to. people claim that metal, hard rock, etc is unhealthy, coz it has loads of stuff abt death, destruction, sex, drugs, stuff like that. but doesnt "mainstream" music that flies all over mtv an overload of sex drugs money and things that parents otherwise shouldnt want their 9 yr olds watching? if society disdains our choice in music, why don't they disdain their own, when at times its worse, since its more easily available to the young and impressionable? at the very least, metal, hard rock, stuff like that isnt usually available on mtv, and their records are tougher to hunt down, whereas u get rappers rapping all about how they *beeped* and stuff.

in any case, i think the government, instead of banning a show entirely, should just perhaps limit the size of the show, toss in age limits, restrict to no drinking on site, etc. everyone keeps calling for creativity, but when ideas and things are actually creative in a way are available, they claim they are conservative and want to ban it. its, odd.

thats just my 5c share, no offense was meant to any.

This whole mess start up from a Malaysian tabloid magazine on black metal cult in Malaysia running the story somewhere in August. Then came the December 05 Seremban gig ambush which they (the Malaysian media) claim that has satanic ritual going on stage and at the same time, 3 Singapore metalheads who happen to be there were arrested for drugs consumption. With this, the banning of MAYHEM in Malaysia already passed and the reports on the 3 Singapore metalheads appear on the local Berita Harian, I guess, made the authority over here open both of their eyes on what these hoohah is all about. Then with the tip from a 'saint' in the public to New Paper, some 'dirty laundries' have to be clean up.

Some other interesting news (got it from 3rd party source) from Malaysia just few days ago is the New Years gig ambush at KL. And that was a hardcore/ punk gigs... all of them... the gig goers, like in Seremban gig ambush, were gathered and arrested including the performing bands... which interestingly has FORCE VORMIT in the gig line up and also a Jap band. The authority there claimed that that was a Black Metal Cult gig. Can you believe that?

With all these backlashes all over at Malaysia metal scene and now spilling into hardcore/ punk scene, some lawyers (1 of the lawyers happen to be a metal listener) are trying to study on how to proceed with legal fight against the media in Malaysia.

Interesting eh.... I hope the Malaysian lawyers have a strong case to file defamation legal suits against those (hinting: the media involves) who are making up stories about Malaysian metal scene.

on grounds of defamation, it'll be an uphill battle.

i don't see it as a case of having a legal representative to nanny the metal scene. it's about speaking up & making others know that the materials churned out by the media (tabloid or otherwise) are simply rerpretations of shallow mindsets. the authorities are also keen to find scapegoats to fulfill their agenda, it's nothing new.

what's new is the presence of a growing breed of music proponents who make efforts to open eyes & minds.

Agreed sub.

However it's more than an "uphill battle" in this instance. It's more like an upward battle against gravity and a ten thousand pound rock conveniently positioned right above you.

Like it or not we HAVE to have a legal representative "nanny" the metal scene, so to speak.

I mean, realistically, the idea of "free press" does not exist in this region. If an attempt to speak up above the heads of the media is made, how much ground can it cover? How many people will be exposed to it for that matter? The most viable option would be to work on the media ITSELF, in which case, "unfulfilled agendas" by *certain* individuals would rapidly cause the matter to be diluted and dissipated into oblivion anyway, and in the process, counteract the promise of success, and we'd be right back at square one.

If the case can be won, legally in black and white for everyone to witness, who's to say it won't silence the people on the other end of our coin? In my opinion this would be a more likely scenario.

The promise of hope these proponents provide by making an attempt to open peoples' minds and demolish opinions formed as the result of bad media coverage is definitely a ray of light for our side though.

By the way, I'm not exactly a fan of the new paper either, especially after how it handled a certain "incident" which occured in my school a couple of years back. Let's just say, it isn't exactly the most accurate source of news around, even for a tabloid...

well now that it's all out in the papers, even harder for license to get approved. thanks to the tipper, else i think the new paper would never once in its existence come across a band like mayhem. AAAAAAAHG!!!!!!!!

Actually i like Singapore in all its conservativeness ... But stuff like rock bands coming in to perform and stuff, i'm for .. Crazy horse maybe i'm against ...

Rockers may sue over "unlawful detention".

Check out The Straits Times today, page 21.

Good God, is there no end to the Malaysian authorities' paranoia?!?!
Obviously they don't give two rats ass on what kind of music the gig was all about. Since when is Force Vomit remotely metal? Basically detaining anyone wearing black? Man, that is just wacky! I hope somebody will go ahead and sue them. If not for unlawful detention, then for extreme stupidity.
