Arsène Wenger has explained his decision to recall Robin van Persie for Tuesday night's Champions League clash with Milan.
The Dutch forward returned to full training on Friday but he has played just three games since late October because of injury and has been out since early January because of a thigh problem.
Wenger insisted he would not rush Van Persie back into action but the Frenchman believes the 24-year-old has a role to play in the San Siro.
"He has not played for five months really but he can play a part in the game," said Wenger. "He is not ready to start but medically it is not a risk. Maybe to start in the game and play above his normal pace, that would be a risk."
Kolo Toure has not recovered from the calf injury he sustained in the first leg against Milan but, according to Wenger, "he is not far from being there."

Emmanuel Eboue is available as his suspension does not cover Champions League games but Tomas Rosicky (hamstring), Alex Song (knee) and Eduardo (leg/ankle) are all out.

Wenger - We need to show pace and patience in Milan

AC Milan v Arsenal

Champions League Round 2 Leg 2

San Siro

Tue, Mar 4, 2008, 7.45pm

By Richard Clarke
Pace and patience will be the key qualities for Arsenal in Milan, according to Arsène Wenger.
The Frenchman flew out to Italy on Monday afternoon for a crucial Champions League Knockout Round second leg. The first game was billed as Italian guile and experience against English youth and pace.
The Anglo-Saxons had the edge at Emirates Stadium and should have profited from their second-half dominance. However Wenger feels that 0-0 is psychologically a good position for his side - as long as they heed the lessons of the first game.
"I do not like to go away from home thinking my team just has to defend," he said. "With a 0-0 result, we know that we have to attack as well as defend.
"From the first game, we have the belief we can beat them because we dominated the game - that always has an impact on the second game.
"We will need patience against them in Milan but our pace can be a good asset as well."
However the Rossoneri are the masters of brinkmanship in Europe. In the last five years they have been to three Finals, winning the trophy twice. Wenger expects a tactical affair in which the control of the tempo will mean control of the game.
"Milan have shown in Europe that they can deal with all sorts of opposition, they can slow the game down," said the Frenchman.
"What Milan do well is put you to their pace, and when Kaka gets the ball they can have sudden acceleration which can kill you.
"We will have to adapt to that because we like to play always at a high pace. In the end we should have won the first game because we were able to keep the game at a consistent high pace. We like to play at a consistent high pace, they like to play slow-quick.
"We have to be tight defensively out there because they tore Man United apart in the first 20 minutes of the second leg at the San Siro last season.
"It is important for us to start strongly in defence, but also not to hide every time we win the ball.
"What is good from the first result is we know every time we get the ball we are incited to go for a goal. When you win 2-0 away from home sometimes subconsciously you think you only have to defend. On that basis 0-0 is not a bad result because you know defence is not good enough. You know will have to attack as well."

Wenger - We won't kick Kaka at the San Siro

AC Milan v Arsenal

Champions League Round 2 Leg 2

San Siro

By Richard Clarke
Arsène Wenger will not send his side out to kick Kaka on Tuesday night. The Arsenal manager considers the Brazilian playmaker to be one of football's artists.
Wenger takes his side to Milan on Monday for a crucial Champions League Knockout Round second leg. The tie is locked at 0-0 and so goals will be at a premium. Kaka has all the attributes to unlock the Arsenal defence but Wenger, who has recently been critical of over-zealous tackles against his players, would never send out his side with malice a forethought.
"No chance, no chance," he said before the weekend game with Villa. "If you kick the great players out of games then why should people watch football? Great players make football a bit special - an art. If you kick them it is not acceptable.
"In Italy, what do the teams when they play against Milan? Take Kaka, get him out of the game. And you know how they will deal with that.
"But we will be faithful to what we do, we will try to deal with him by cutting the connections to him. We will play zonal and will not mark him man-to-man."

U lot can argue on who won what, where, when and how

Thats why we're the Captains ... ;)

ANd I agree with FGL. Scoring late goals is a quality of champions. Look at last season when United won. A lot of last minute goals. Mentality brings in trophies.

Rio Ferdinand said: "I think teams who are considered great teams have normally won the European Cup but I don't think it's the be all and end all. Some teams that have won the Champions League are not considered great teams, but if you do well domestically and then go on to win it, then obviously that adds to your being a good side.

This team is on the verge of greatness.

By Richard Clarke
Arsène Wenger is convinced his side are on the verge of greatness no matter what happens at the San Siro this evening.
At the start of the season, the Frenchman saw his young team portrayed as the weaklings of the 'Big Four' who would struggle to retain their Champions League status after the coming campaign.
Although their form has started to teeter in recent games, when they walk out to face Carlo Ancelotti's side this evening Wenger's men will have their two main targets - the Premier League and the Champions League - still within sight.
If you believe the bookmakers those European hopes will only last another 90 minutes. Certainly Milan are heavyweight opponents. They have never lost to English opponents at home and they have gone through at the San Siro in each of their five previous knockout ties when the away leg has finished 0-0. But Wenger is not viewing his side's development in terms of this game alone.
"I believe this side will improve no matter what happens on Tuesday night," he said at Monday's press conference. "We will be a great side. I feel we are already one but a cup game is decided on the form of the day. If you ask me are we as strong as Milan then I say yes but the form of the day will decide tomorrow. However this team will achieve great things."
That said, Wenger knows there is only one yardstick for true footballing greatness.
"By winning major trophies and consistently competing at the top level," he replied when asked for his own definition. "At the moment I feel a top team is consistent. I can play a great shot in tennis or golf but to beat a great player I need to be consistent. Consistency is the first mark of a great team and we have that.
"To be almost unbeaten in a whole season in the same way Inter Milan are dominating their championship is a fantastic achievement.
"After that you have sides who make history. Sides who win the European Cup three, four or five times on the trot. This team is far from doing that, we have to go step by step.
"But they have experienced different steps up so far this season. The first one was to raise themselves up the level I expected them to achieve. The second thing was to be under [pressure for] expected performances. We have been under pressure since January now.
"Before January, we were the surprise of the season, since January people take us as candidates for the Premier League so we have matured quite quickly."
The extent of that maturity will be scrutinised this evening.

Arsenal marched into the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 2-0 win thanks to a superb late strike from Cesc Fabregas which helped send holders AC Milan crashing out at the San Siro.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had talked up his young side as having all the qualities needed to progress against the odds, and so it proved as Milan were out battled for most of the encounter.
A famous victory, 2-0 on aggregate, was delivered when Spain international Fabregas smashed in a brilliant 25-yard strike with just six minutes left and Emmanuel Adebayor added a second in stoppage-time.

Empics
Fabregas fires Arsenal's first goal.

It was no more than Arsenal deserved, becoming the first English team to beat Milan here, having dominated for long spells and with Fabregas earlier having hit the crossbar.
With a one-point lead at the top of the Barclays Premier League to protect, this season could just turn out to be a vintage one for Wenger's latest charges.
The San Siro was packed to near capacity, at 81,879, and the atmosphere was electric as the match kicked off.
Wenger had been keen to ensure the Italians did not look to slow the tempo.
Arsenal started brightly, closing down Milan well and denying them space in midfield.
After seven minutes, Alex Hleb found himself in space at the edge of the penalty area - but crashed his drive well over.
However, it was the hosts who almost snatched an early lead, when a corner from the left was flicked on at the near post by Paolo Maldini - and it needed a goal-line clearance from Fabregas to keep the ball out.
After 13 minutes, Arsenal broke quickly as Adebayor latched onto a long pass from Fabregas. The Togo frontman held the ball up and laid it off to the advancing Abou Diaby, but his placed shot from 20 yards was just over the top-right angle.
Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia got down well to smother a far-post volley from Filippo Inzaghi as play continued to move from end to end.
A sweeping run by Kaka saw Milan break down the left in the 18th minute. As the defence backed off, the Brazilian chipped the ball to the far post, where Alexandre Pato really should have done better than just a feeble shot straight at Almunia.
Milan continued to press, with Inzaghi heading wide from a corner and Kaka's low drive skimming just the wrong side of the near post.
Adebayor - who hit the woodwork in stoppage time during the first leg - came close to scoring again after 27 minutes.
The big African cut inside from the right, and his 12-yard drive was tipped over by Milan keeper Zeljko Kalac.
Arsenal were now enjoying a good spell themselves and Hleb was incensed after he appeared to be caught by Alessandro Nesta on the edge of the Milan penalty area - but was harshly cautioned by Austrian referee Konrad Plautz for what he saw as a dive.
Adebayor stepped inside before rolling the ball back along the 18-yard line to Fabregas.
The Spaniard set himself before rifling in a drive which beat Kalac, but crashed against the crossbar.
Arsenal did well to keep possession, which frustrated the home crowd heading into the break, and had another golden chance to net that crucial away goal after the restart.
A cross from the left found its way through to Philippe Senderos at the back post - but the defender's effort was hit straight at Kalac.
After 50 minutes, Emmanuel Eboue was played in on the overlap down the right side of the Milan penalty area, but blasted his angled drive wide.
Almunia had to be alert to turn away a 25-yard free-kick from Andrea Pirlo at full stretch, as the ball looked to be sneaking into the bottom right corner.
The pace was relentless as the hour mark approached.
There was a warning for the Gunners, though, when Kaka broke down the left and surged to the edge of the penalty area before drilling his shot just wide.
Wenger sent on Theo Walcott, replacing Eboue, and the England Under-21 winger almost set up Adebayor - but his cutback from the goalline was cleared.
Pato flashed an angled drive just wide from the left side of the penalty area as the tie remained on a knife-edge heading into the final 10 minutes of normal time.
Then, out of nothing, Fabregas won it with a superb solo goal. The Spain midfielder picked up the ball, sidestepped Gennaro Gattuso and drilled a 25-yard strike into the bottom right corner. Adebayor scored a second in added time, following a fine run and low cross from Walcott along the goal-line, to cap a magnificent night for the Gunners.
